Avanti charging amendment fees on excesses.

That’s a good response from Avanti, much better to be honest about the situation.

Newcastle to Exeter and return during Industrial Action

I would also travel via London, and book assistance at Kings Cross and Paddington.

    Huddersfield RRB Ticket Inspection

I wouldn't expect a bus driver to check tickets (in the same way as a train driver doesn't check tickets) but there's no reason why revenue staff cannot check tickets. RRBs should not be seen as a free ride.

    XC ASLEF industrial action.

Just to point out that the Post Office (the state owned company that operates the counters side of the business and whete the Horizon issue happened) is a completely separate organisation to Royal Mail (the privatised company that sorts and delivers mail).

Non-paper London 7 day travelcard ticket

If you want an inboundary Travelcard select a starting station inside zones 1-6, for example I usually use Finsbury Park

    Huddersfield RRB Ticket Inspection

I think there’ll be more ticket checks on RRBs, too many treating it as a free ride and checking tickets is relatively straightforward.

    Greater Anglia Travel Irregularity

I don't have as much time these days to get involved in individual cases but Greater Anglia normally will normally settle these matters without having to go to court as long as you co-operate with them. You'll find plenty of examples in other threads in this section of this forum demonstrating...

Thameslink Core Major Power Failure 28/8/25

The problem with this plan is that the four 12-car Thameslink trains an hour that serve Stevenage and Hitchin are cancelled and replaced by SSOs on two 8-car trains an hour. Yes, the stoppers also operate (although some were cancelled in last weeks disruption) but taking last weeks disruption...

Expansion of LNER 70-min flex trial area ("Simpler Fares")

It seems that the Telegraph has read the article that appeared on busandtrainuser.com a few weeks back. Good that this is now starting to be exposed in the mainstream media.

GPS-based PAYG trials on EMR / Northern

Under distance based pricing how much would you charge for a day return from York to Whitby, avoiding Darlington. Would the fare be competitive with the coach service provided by Coastliner that costs only slightly more than the current rail ticket price but offers a shorter journey time? Also...

Travelcard from outside London on the Tube during evening peak hours

To confirm, there are no evening peak restrictions for journeys wholly within Zones 1-6, regardless of mode.

Lambeth North to Vauxhall — so near, yet so far! All routes awkward; which is best?

I'd walk this, at least in one direction for a daily commute. It's also cheaper to walk, those £2.90 single tube journeys add up across a week!

    What is an "Open Return"?

There is no ticket called Open Return. Historically open return referred to the Standard Open Return (code SOR) which had a validity of a month on the return portion. The SOR is what today we know as the Anytime Return. In recent years many retailers refer to open return as any ticket...

    Rugby Union

I was at the Ireland V Spain match at Franklin's Gardens and I'd say it was a competitive match. Final score 43-27 with a try count of 7-5 in Ireland's favour, Spain gave it everything and certainly had Ireland rattled.

This is beyond the scope of this thread but is worthy of a separate thread.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

Don't think that fares under BR were 'simple' because they weren't. The reality is with 2,500+ stations and tickets between each pair of them there is always going to be complexity.

    Gloucester Road Station

Recently I've been using South Kensington station frequently. It's not really fir for purpose - ticket hall and steps to the station are horribly cramped with people heading to the museums and Royal Albert Hall. A few weeks ago on a Sunday morning the crowding on the patforms and steps was so...

    Contactless to stansted

National Rail Enquiries is indeed suggesting that contactless is available from Stansted Airport from 7th September. I've attached a screenshot below in case of future query. It is possible that contactless will be valid from that date, 7th September is the start of the September fares round...
