    Commuting 'not coming back': Harper

Or the government massiveley overspent during Covid and government borrowing has to be tamed. I think all departments will have to cope with decreasing budgets. Probably just not increased to cope with high inflation.

    Transdev Blazefield

M4 Keighley-Burnley goes through Utley, Steeton, loops the loop through Airedale Hospital then straight through Crosshills, Glusburn and Cowling. Utley gets 7 buses an hour. I am sure 1 or more of them could use the bypass between Steeton and Keighley to give faster journeys. maybe one M4 and...

With that, you have to understand the concept of opportunity cost If I decide to buy a pint of beer and not 3 packets of biscuits, the biscuit industry has lost out even though the brewing industry gained. So money spent on the railway by government is money not spent on health, building ships...

Most sensible (least daft) main line restoration

(Leeds) - Harrogate - Ripon. An alternative to the trans pennine route via York and to give Harrogate a way out to the North East. Give Ripon a station. Its an expanding town with expanding satelite villages.

Manchester was a 'nearly with Picc-Vic - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picc-Vic_tunnel. Leeds had a plan for a tram tunnel 20 years earlier. That was never built either.

Could we start to see the DfT purchase rolling stock outright?

We must remember ROSCOs do more than finance stock. Especially mid life upgrades. They did a lot of work financing disabled people mods to rail vehicles. Do the DfT have that expertise?

You need to grow revenue by:- Getting more bums on seats on trains. Better marketing needed. But not at times when the trains are full already Getting more revenue from existing passengers. Less generous discounts, not selling cheap advances for trains likely to be full of passengers paying...

Luxembourg made public transport free: Here’s what happened next

A free train (or bus) is no use if it doesnt go where you want to go. People look at 2 costs to them when deciding how to do a journey. Monetary cost and time. That probably explains Estonia.

Bi-modes using diesel under the wires

Maybe the National Grid was in trouble and asked the railway to limit use. Might be worth looking at the history on https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/ and see if there was a issue that day. But that wont tell you about a missing generating asset. Link goes to a graphical display of current UK...

But people dont buy anytimes. They buy off peaks. Delay setting off in the morning by an hour having done one hr of work at home. Leave for home just before the peak restrictions come in in the evening and do more work at home to make the hours up. Even work on the train

Was the IC 225 project the success BR thought it would be

The MML I remember was mostly cl 45/46 and early aircon Mk 2's The HST's were a big step forward. Getting 110 out of them on the sinuous MML was a good step up too.

Was the IC 225 project the success BR thought it would be

Some of us have seen the transitions. Deltics and EE type 4's > Deltics + cl 47 and aircon Mk 2s > Deltic + 8 > HST > Cl91 + Mk 4 > IET. Each was a step forward. Without the ones before, each generation would have been difficult But HST saved the Inter City business. Without that the railway...
