First West Yorkshire & York discussion

Otley - Ilkley need a decent half hour service. Via the old main road through Burley, then either the main road or Valley Drive from Wheatley/Ben Rhydding. And the 'round the houses' service on top. Extend the 62 or 64 eastwards, or the A1 or X52 westwards. But it looks like the X84 will...

Why aren't the platforms at UK railway stations renumbered?

Trains to London went from 1/19, and were shown as 1/19 on the information screens. But trains were longer then. I am talking back in the 80's

First West Yorkshire & York discussion

The X84 and the X98/X99 are not exactly a good fit for First Leeds, which is mostly an urban operation - the old Leeds City Transport. Trailing off into the country is a different ball game. I was unsurprised they abandoned Skipton. The Aire and Wharfedale areas have good trains, so there...

Ideas for York - Leeds - Manchester improvements

The most important flow is Leeds - Manchester. If resources are scarce, that's where they should concentrate on.

Why aren't the platforms at UK railway stations renumbered?

Haven't the tekkies discovered soft coding. The fact the platform numbers are hard coded isn't good coding practice.

Trivia: places with infrequent trains to London and similarly rare services.

A few posts above about St Pancras - Leeds services. They started in BR days to get HSTs to Neville Hill. Now EMR have binned their HSTs there is no need to run north of Sheffield

The most Scenic line on the UK

The WCML through the lune gorge is my favourite. Settle/Carlisle is a close settle. The bentham line is vastly underrated The leeds-Harrogate line after Bramhope tunnel. The views up and down Wharfedale are nice Dont know if people who said 'Cumbrian Coast' included Carnforth - Barrow. The...

Rolling Stock past and present that were a step up from their predecessors

I was commuting on the cross city line. The electrics were not much of a step up from the odds and ends of suburban DMUs IMHO. The step change were the 323's. I dId like it when i got a slam door electric during the phasing in of the 323's, but thats just me!

(Light-hearted). Things you might expect to see at railway locations but don't

Dudley port used to be an area of wharves and warehouses for the canal network in the area. It was 'Dudley's Port' as it served Dudley but was outwith the borough.

    Sprinter Extinction

class 150 first took to the rails 1984 (prototypes) and 1985 (Series production of 150/1) Modernisation plan DMU's lasted till 2003. (Cl 101) So don't expect a quick changeover.

Was there a time when "Signing" for a route was seen as more important than Traction?

What about Southern region EMU's back in the day. Would you need traction knowledge for all the types around say in 1970? Or did you just know 3rd rail EMU's.?

Ideas for York - Leeds - Manchester improvements

Sorting Marsh lane - Leeds Stn is the hard one. I can think of no reasonable way to widen it. I have tried to think if a tunnel would work. But there is lady beck which runs under the railway by the bus station, which has a propensity to flood so that would be a difficulty. Under the station...
