    Extended, or Deltic-style, cab fronts

Weren't the extended nose on early diesel locos to stop the effects of 'sleeper flicker' on drivers? Why they changed their mind and ordered cl47 without them I don't know But the nose was a handy place to put toilets, air compressors etc. How the 1Co-Co1 would work without a nose I dont know.

EMUs on WCML 70s to 2000s

I think the 304's were shedded at crewe. They had a facility on the up side between the station and the line to Stoke. Were the 303's allocated there too so were in a common pool with the 304's

How can the railway best contribute to fighting the climate crisis

I would scrap the railcards and bring in a loyalty scheme. Like airline points. Regular users get points to buy more train tickets.

How can the railway best contribute to fighting the climate crisis

Best way is to export 'green' train technology to China and India to offset their expanding coal fired power station provision. Thats where the big savings are to be made. Making kyle of Lochalsh carbon free less so.

Not just the spacing of the columns. The size of beer barrels determined the size of the trainshed. The floor between the beer cellar and the tracks also is a tie reducing the thrust of the trainshed arch outwards meaning less butressing. How the have managed to make big holes in it I dont know...

De Lijn are the successor to the flemish part of NMVB who ran the rural tramways. These were replaced by buses post WW2. Except for the Kusttram. They also run urban trams in Antwerpen & Gent for example

And the 840. It used to be a United/West Yorkshire joint as a 91. We caught it from Leeds to Goathland for a weeks holiday there in the early 1970's

Badly laid out road junctions discussion.

Back to rubbish junctions, what about where the A43 joins the A40. Its 2 roundabouts joined by one overbridge over the motorway. Ot helped by having a services glued on. But there are some horrid adverse cambers so trucks frequently topple. Or have they fixed it now?

    Engine tender coupling query

Probably replace it at regular intervals. Replacing components on condition is a relatively new concept.

Double length tube train stopping in random location - thoughts re: capacity?

Thanks for that. Of course it was feltham built 'Standard stock' now you remind me. One of the reasons this wasnt taken forward was 1938 stock had no equipment compartment so passenger carrying capacity was increased without cumbersome solutions like this. Remember, a 7 car standard stock train...

Double length tube train stopping in random location - thoughts re: capacity?

Before WW2 the did a 10 car scheme on the northern line. The surface level platforms were extended and the train stopped with different coaches on the platform at the central stations. This from memory so i may have details wrong. Think the OP is suggesting the revival of an old idea!

Trivia: Places which are often used (or you have used yourself) as unofficial park & ride sites

I used to use Marston Green when I worked in Central Brum. Sometimes got in the free station car park, sometimes in the street. I also drove to Evesham and parked on street, while working in Wembley. Then switched to Warwick Parkway. Weekly season to Wembley Central + parking was cheaper than...

    Substantive bus service withdrawals post-Covid

Trouble is available crew numbers is volatile. A burst of drivers testing positive for covid can decimate rotas. Difficult to plan.

Rolling Stock past and present that were a step up from their predecessors

There was the concept of the 'total retention toilet' where no toilet matter went on the track Other trains had a tank but when full the idea was the liquid was dumped on the track and the solids stayed in the tank. I also think 'grey water', ie from the sink, also went on the track but I think...

Can I buy bus & train tickets in the Netherlands using cash?

I use a fairfx card. I can load € onto it online and then withdraw cash as eurozone ATMs, or use in outlets. But I have only been to Greece recently, and that before COVID. There I got cash at an ATM and paid for stuff in cash. Well, its Greece where cash is still king.
