First West Yorkshire & York discussion

I wonder what proportion of the operations are still with First compared to when they first acquired them. Midland Red West - much gone West Yorkshire -much gone. First Bradford is tiny compared to Yorkshire Rider days and now First Leeds are flogging off routes. 1663962842 Major reductions in...

1978 the Stafford - Manchester stoppers stopped there roughly 2 hourly. Stopped at the other stations between Stone and Stoke too. Nothing on Sundays. Some started back at New Street.

Which stations/services have seen the seen the worst decline since privatisation?

but not if you are infirm, are wary of changing, or have heavy luggage. Then arranging your day to get a through train is worth it. Or people drive or dont travel.

Rolling Stock past and present that were a step up from their predecessors

They were all the same bodyshell, except some of the windows were not cut out. They were heavily reliant on jigs in manufacturing. Retooling with new jigs would have been too expensive.

Trivia: Routes with different variations that share the same number

Stagecoach 555 Lancaster - Keswick does some journeys between Lancaster and Kendal via the M6, missing out Hest Bank, Carnforth and Milnthorpe.

The Royal train and HM Queen Elizabeth II funeral plans.

I imagine the train planners will be rewriting timetables to get the large number of people who will wish to be in London for the events that will occur there, notably the state funeral and the Coronation. I think BR and LT paid a major part in the events for the last state funeral and...

How can the railway best contribute to fighting the climate crisis

There must be a lot of flights from remote parts of scotland, especially islands. Not sure rail can capture those. Are flights to the Isle of Man and Channel Islands included in those numbers?

Trivia: Routes with different variations that share the same number

Harrogate Bus Co has some Harrogate - Leeds journeys extended to or from Starbeck, which is not on the normal Leeds Harrogate - Ripon route. It's basically buses running from the garage to the bus station being able and willing to take passengers.

    Sprinter Extinction

BR went in for a lot of dual sourcing. There were 2 types of traction motor in HST's. 2 makes of 3rd rail networkers. GEC and ML signaling for example. Woukd a new series production of MU train have dual sourcing or would they risk one vendor?

    Sprinter Extinction

Not sure Leeds - Castleford needs the same train as Leeds - Carlisle. We have 150's and 158's for a reason. But it should be possible to make a bodyshell that can have end doors like a 158 and 1/3 - 2/3 doors like a 150. Dont know is there is anywhere a 23m vehicle cant go.

    Substantive bus service withdrawals post-Covid

It's a common fallacy that the services in the 50's and 60's offered frequent buses to many villages. Actually they didn't. Look at the timetables from back then. Many have headnotes denoting days of operation, many operated on market days only for instance. Would an out and back service on...

How can the railway best contribute to fighting the climate crisis

That will depend on the mix of electricity in the grid. Much electricity in Europe is generated by fossil fuels. Even just now wind is generating 7.73 GW, which is 21.31% of 36.28GW demand. But we are using 17.22GW of gat turbine, thats 47.47%. We are even producing 1.03GW of coal generation...

How can the railway best contribute to fighting the climate crisis

For journeys needing an early start one wonders how many people fly or drive because of the traumatic fare levels on the train. Or drive half way. Maybe the railway should provide enough capacity so many passengers dont need to be priced off.

Then why not simply sandwich a 150/2 between 2 150/1 cars and make a semi-permanent 4 car unit?
