    Commuting 'not coming back': Harper

WFH was a thing pre-pandemic. Covid just gave it the impetus to expand by a lot. People were sliding out of coming into work for odd days at my clients way back in 2015. Any old excuse would do because management did it too! I was WFH back in 2010. 1 day in work a fortnight. It aint new.

Not sure major conurbations are viable public transport areas. Many of the bus services have been thinned out or abandoned. Or finish too early in the evening. The offering in Leeds is a shadow of what was running when I was a kid (60's/70's), when just using the bus was an option.

but people do this all the time. They will drive past Manchester airport to catch a flight from Heathrow without a thought of the cost of getting to Heathrow. Or they will drive to an Aldi in the next town 16 miles away because the Waitrose where they live is too expensive.

    Destination Blinds - a question

Beware. There are people making replica ones. Many of the ones on preserved buses are replicas because the originals have decayed beyond use.

Government wont make cuts. There will be a challenging spending review leading to difficult choices in Network Rail and the TOCs'. The railway is a network of quangos to distance ministers from making unpopular decisions. And has been since 1948.

    150. They have a workhorse where a short train with a decent capacity is needed. no bells and whistles so little to go wrong.

    Colne-Skipton

Easier solutions than Colne - Skipton 1. A curve at Gannow to allow Colne trains to run via Copy Pit to wherever. I would send them to Manchester rather than to Leeds. 2. Improve the bus service that runs Burnley - Keighley. Use the M65 more rather than ploughing through the likes of...

Luxembourg made public transport free: Here’s what happened next

And we have hills Who fancies cycling from Bradford city centre to Idle? Or even Shipley to Baildon. Bradford did OK with buses and trolleybuses when the city centre was where people wanted to go. With employment distributed far and wide, and longer distance commuting being a thing now, there...

The effectiveness of the current UK driving test

I get videos from an American lady who moved to Leeds, on Faceache. She says driving in the UK is VERY hard compared to the US. We have towns with narrow streets and single track roads in the country. And main roads with bends on them. She learned to drive UK style and took a UK driving test...

Teething issues that plagued the HST + MK3 sets

One of the issues was binary driving. The timetable needed periods of full power interspersed with just hotel load. So stuff got hot then cooled leading to thermal stressing. I think the cylinder heads were the worst affected. Big problem on western with the frequent stops as the HST services...
