It's not a good thing, but I am far more upset about the sudden proliferation of 5 and 7 car intercity trains on both the West and East Coast.
Fleet orders trimmed back to their bare minimum by short sighted paucity and penny pinching, and built to a miserly Government specification yet somehow...
That 20 minutes can be a giveaway though. I can't think of another 20 minute walk I have encountered, maybe Kings Cross to Euston but I think when it was Stafford, I was routed Kings Cross to Euston as a 5 minute tube journey.
I've switched to Ely as my starting station. Kings Cross is 1:15...
And I got it in two! There aren't many 7 hour connections from Peterborough!

Is it me or was Shrewsbury done twice in the last few weeks? I didn't immediately guess it on Sunday or Monday (whenever it was) because I thought I'd seen it in the last month!
I've always suspected that this is because of the primary importance of advertising disabled boarding correctly (although the marshaling has the disabled doors in the same place on 387 and 379) and the position of First Class and is a less important but useful side effect.
The formation is...
Theoretically yes, and I am as paranoid as anyone about poorly trained RPIs, but I've never seen a case on here, on Reddit or in the press about someone being chinged in the rear compartment, or even had to clarify/correct an RPI on board whilst sitting there.
Was it ever reported on here? Was...
For a Cambridge/Peterborough-Brighton/Horsham there are 26 declassified seats on a train that seats 666, and it is full within a couple of stops on busy services. It might seem fairer for all customers to advertise it better (and less of a hack for us in the know) but it wouldn't suddenly mean...
GN systems are very good, in my experience. I have never seen them incorrectly report the different locations of First Class (and disabled area) on 387s, 379s and 700s.
Yes. I have seen some recent vague doubt over this on this forum on this issue and whether it is explicitly stated anywhere, but it's beyond reasonable doubt, to me. I have passed every ticket check I have ever had in such situations (I travel from a station only served by GN), station...
If you are already travelling you're probably out of luck, but if not or you've only just boarded, you could try breaking your journey at Ely or Cambridge and asking the ticket office for an excess there. I think that would be your best bet. Cambridge are particularly knowledgable. Obviously...
You're conflating a lot of arguments and grievances here.
Your argument to GTR isn't that First Class isn't obvious, because it clearly is. The signs and antimacassars are very clear, the seats and facilities are totally different (unlike on many Southern trains) there's a yellow stripe above...
Achanalt-Achnasheen-Achnashellach on the Kyle of Lochalsh line.
Ardrossan Harbour-Adrossan Town-Adrossan South Beach
And soon, Cambridge North, Cambridge, Cambridge South :)
Sunderland and Seaham are followed immediately by Horden and Hartlepool on the Durham Coast, all with nothing in between.
The Heart of Wales is also a gift for this, with:
Church Stretton-Craven Arms
Knighton-Knucklas
Llangyllo-Llanbister Road
Llangammarch-Llanwrtyd...
I had been looking at that part of the network when planning a trip recently, so it was fresh in my mind, and once I had worked out that I was changing at Birmingham New Street and had a L, I went for the one I knew better, but it was wrong!
Lots of options from Doncaster to Pontefact/Wakefield/Bradford etc and lots of alternative options from London to York.
Assuming ticket acceptance in place and some notice given, very pragmatic use of resource. It manages not to cancel one or two trains entirely that day, or two trains...
Seven today, they're definitely getting a bit more obscure! My first six guesses contained no yellow or green letters at all which did help eliminate some options.
You can't guess by the three letter code so if you don't know all the codes by heart you don't always know if you're guessing a...
Hold off on sending until you have some more opinions but it looks fine to me, GTR settle practically every time and the letter is concise, honest, apologetic and contains everything we usually suggest! They'll likely write back with a financial offer to you in final settlement.
This bit is disingenuous at best, it omitted the fact you bought the ticket on the train. You have edited out the bit about "before travelling" at least. They know you bought it after boarding, probably as the inspectors were coming down the train, you now know that's your offence. Admitting it...
