Pub near Paddington prior to the Night Riviera

Both times I've done the Riviera I've dined in the Victoria! Gorgeous old pub, run by Fullers, and the pub grub and beer are very good.

    Loconundrum

Yes. The logic is working as it should. If you had guessed DEE and the answer was EDE (not a real station) it would show yellow yellow green. If you had guessed DEE and the answer was EDB, it would show yellow yellow blank. If it showed yellow yellow yellow, it would suggest that all three...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

In an ideal world if we are moving stations, I'd move Letchworth station entirely, about 500m, to a point east of Norton Way where the carriage sidings are. Remodel the sidings and build a third platform north of the main running lines. Entrances would be on Birds Hill to the town side and off...

What’s the best ticket for this journey?

I know what you meant but it's the other way round. Ticket is not valid for trains departing London at those times. The train needs to have departed London no earlier than 09:06 and not between 15:00 and 18:58 inclusive.

Consistent delays at Cambridge South: What improvements could be made to resolve these?

They always had plenty of marginal time between their departure times at Stansted and Cambridge. They had (and still have) generous pathing time at Audley End and a sparse service to fit around up to Shepreth Branch Jn. I believe their dwell time at Cambridge used to be four minutes before...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

My memory was of the GN side being very well run and reliable under FCC, and that their bad reputation stemmed almost entirely from the Western side, i.e. Thameslink! It was ever thus!

Which are the best and worst units and stock for Aircon in Heatwave?

Extensive travels last week so I will tier them: Very good: GWR 166, Avanti 390, TL 700, WMT 730, LNWR 730, WMT 196 Average: XC 170, XC 221, GN 387, SE 465 Awful: SWR 159, Avanti 390 (standing in vestibule), Victoria Line Hazardous to human health: TfW 158 The 387 had been switched off during...

Potential uses for GA Aventra 720s

Yes, true, the current Waterbeach would be an issue (as well as potentially Ely P3). I'd solve this with everything south of Cambridge being 10-car, dividing or joining if necessary at Cambridge for the handful of Ely services. The 0650 ex-Ely (1H87) does start as a 5-car and gains coaches at...

Potential uses for GA Aventra 720s

I would like to see some of the shoulder peak services into Liverpool Street in the morning, and out in the evening, bolstered to 10 cars, as commuting is more flexible than ever before. In fact ideally I would like to see the whole service between Cambridge and Liverpool Street as 10 cars, all...

Manic scenes at Newmarket last night (11.07) trying to get home

Entirely reasonable to infer that, as the cancelled Ipswich would normally have come back as 2W26 18:20 IPS-CBG (dep NMK 1917). In the event that train ran on time, the unit will have been sat in P1 at Ipswich all along and clearly had a driver correctly diagrammed for it this time, but you...

Manic scenes at Newmarket last night (11.07) trying to get home

Looks from RTT like service was solidly 4-car all day yesterday. I expect they're very careful to avoid diagramming a 3-car on race days at least. The cancelled diagram ("planning error") was 1620 to Cambridge (too early for racegoers) and the 1709 to Ipswich (not the bigger flow and also before...

Heat related disruption 8 July 2026 onwards

This feels like the worst week on the GB rail network for a very long time. The wide spread, consistent nature and deep severity of the compounding issues on almost every line in England and Wales. Would it be overdramatic to say this feels worse than anything since the restrictions imposed...

Heat related disruption 8 July 2026 onwards

I used a double 158 on Wednesday from Birmingham International, fortunately only to Birmingham New Street, and i was honestly shocked it was still in service. I boarded an incredibly hot car 2 (which I had headed for because I saw the windows closed and thought the AC must be working). I tried...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

They had done in the afternoon, one or two came in on 2Ls and left on 2Cs. I've no idea if this was normal or always the plan.

Heat related disruption 8 July 2026 onwards

Well, what a week of travel. Not intending to make this a trip report but a sense of how unpredictable it has been out there, notwithstanding the eccentric nature of my plans. On Tuesday: Plan: Royston-London-Weymouth-Gloucester-Birmingham Actual: Royston-London-Basingstoke (train...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Now three out of four Kings Lynn trains cancelled leaving the 1718, 1848 and 1948 as the peak service. One of the Cambridge stoppers and a Royston extra also cancelled. That said, the simpler timetable and diagrams seem to make those isolated cancellations rather than knocking everything out...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Also the 1654 1C80 to Cambridge is being started at Welwyn Garden City "due to train crew being delayed". The ECS from Hornsey to Kings Cross to form it will instead run to Welwyn. People can at least take a Horsham to Peterborough that far. Other than that, tis but a blip!

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Well quite! Half hourly Kings Lynns and 12 car trains splitting at Cambridge are in our immediate future!

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

With the Brighton-Cambridges cancelled, the interim timetable from Kings Cross consists of 2tph stoppers to Cambridge from P10, and alternating 1tph each to Ely and Kings Lynn from P9, which will later become 2tph to Kings Lynn for the peak. And I must say, it is running almost impeccably!
