Major Disruption through Purley 14/06/2026. Structural problem with rail bridge

Thanks for this. I only have to go from Hove to South Cambs so have more options, including a last train from Kings Cross after midnight. I'm going to go all the way to PMH based on the alternative route suggestions of "any alternative Southern service" and "South Western Railway between...

Major Disruption through Purley 14/06/2026. Structural problem with rail bridge

I'm in Hove and preparing to travel to London via Portsmouth Harbour into Waterloo

    Cambridge South new station opening

Ah, we don't use the Oxford comma in Cambridge ;)

    Cambridge South new station opening

The groundwork is already well advanced, I would consider it started! I agree, nobody is going to do this. Other than some local residents in walking distance, Cambridge South won't be a railhead for commuting, it'll overwhelmingly be a destination.

Cambridge Stations ticketing and the forthcoming Cambridge South

I've just remembered the other/real reason provided which is the fares check rule. The Cambridge-London Any Permitted Off Peak Day Return (CDR) is £27.50 and the Shelford-London Any Permitted CDR is £30.00. Cambridge is a routing point for Shelford and since the doubleback passes the fares...

Cambridge Stations ticketing and the forthcoming Cambridge South

It doesn't really make sense, it just means you can't do so on a Shelford to London Terminals on one ticket, FCC created it to protect their revenue. It's a clumsy way of prohibiting the doubleback as Shelford to Cambridge is only 3m16ch (3.2 miles) from Shelford, i.e. within 3 miles of the...

Cambridge Stations ticketing and the forthcoming Cambridge South

Slightly more fundamental issue at the moment though, that I cannot select Cambridge South as a destination to book to at all, which I can only GA or Trainline!

Cambridge Stations ticketing and the forthcoming Cambridge South

Will this have the effect of pushing, say, Shelford to Cambridge South to £4.80 (the price to Cambridge), or would standalone fares still apply, if lower? (in this case £3.60) I'm going to report my own post and suggest this discussion moves to the Cambridge South ticketing thread, as the...

Cambridge Stations ticketing and the forthcoming Cambridge South

I posted on the main station construction thread about ticket prices from surrounding stations, where only very short journeys are not harmonised in price between the three, but there is no Cambridge Group or interavailability at Cambridge South. In short, - Whittlesford, Royston, Meldreth...

Cambridge Stations ticketing and the forthcoming Cambridge South

I drove into the Addenbrookes campus this morning, past the new station, just before getting stuck in a long queue of traffic trying to access the staff car park, and eventually the visitor car park! It looks finished, bar a handful of Murphy vans and metal hoardings remaining outside. I could...

    Loconundrum

Yesterday my new starting station paid off again... 1. ELY 2. BLY! Today... I got cloae geographically quite quickly but I don't know that area anywhere near well enough, and it's a lot more obscure than we're used to! 7.

What is the closest you've come to meeting your maker?

Well, it's railway related actually, at the age about 9. Standing on one side of the road bridge over Tyne Yard as an HST approached, and as it passed underneath, I turned and ran across the road without looking, to see it through. A car missed me by feet as I ran, they braked to a halt but not...

First class rear on Thameslink allways declassified.

I'm not sure that's entirely true though because of what the Thameslink-related changes, platform extensions, fixed formations and timetables made possible for the service. Ignoring the fact that the timetable was a disaster, the introduction of Thameslink meant the twice an hour semi fast (RYS...

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

That's what I call planning for growth!

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

Yes, but it's only one station to deal with that issue. If we had 9 cars (say 2.5 First, 6.5 Standard) Assuming coach A and B would be off the platform southbound, pick up only, that isn't the end of the world (coach A has fewer seats and is usually the quietest on Avanti trains anyway), and...

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

Then either extend the platforms, fit SDO to 390s, order 9 car with SDO, or don't serve it. It's a huge procurement decision for one short platform, isn't it? I completely understand ordering 5 cars, but why 7 cars?

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

Fair point on what the Everos have replaced, although latterly the Voyagers ran doubled up to Edinburgh via Birmingham as 10 coach (albeit entirely under the wires) and ran to Chester as 5s/10s and onto Holyhead as 5s (10s?). They didn't run to Liverpool to my knowledge, at least in recent...

Avanti (West Coast Intercity) after being brought back into public ownership

It feels like anything is going to be on the table if it saves cash. The third Birmingham each hour, at least off peak. Then the extremities: Wrexham. The Blackpool. Simplify the Anglo Scottish by routing everyone to/through Glasgow. Fewer ECS movements, fewer staff bases. London and...

Avanti (West Coast Intercity) after being brought back into public ownership

More likely to cut everything back to the core. I'd worry about Holyhead, Blackpool and Edinburgh rather than Inverness.
