Is a first class London Travelcard worth the money?

I buy 1ST tickets on commuter services operated by FGW. Here are the benefits: i) a quieter, more peaceful cabin ii) a good chance of having the entire 1ST section to yourself when travelling off-peak iii) significantly more personal space if the train is full iv) access to the quite...

Maybe I look like a ticket inspector...

So after my St Pancras to Sheffield yesterday it was time to leave the train. I was wearing a blazer, slacks, shirt and tie. And headphones. There was nobody behind me, so when I reached the door of the carriage I stood for a few seconds in the doorway, looking around for the exit. I...

EMT light vs full breakfast in 1ST

I am pleased to report that the light breakfast was good. I had a sausage sandwich and both the bread and sausages were of high quality and tasty. The meal I had from the all day menu in the evening was good too. I had the beef in black bean sauce and it was tasty, balanced and filling. For...

Has anyone been on the curry train to Corbridge?

The Valley Junction Indian restaurant at Corbridge station offers a 'curry train' service where you get on at Newcastle or Carlisle, have a drink and a starter on the train and by the time you arrive at Corbridge your meal is ready. Here is the link. Has anybody tried it? It sounds quite fun.

    Charter Train Company Potential?

As others have said, although fixed costs could be substantial there are one or two operators in this space so there may be some profits to be made. However I wonder if there is scope to look at it in a slightly different way, acting as a specialist tour operator using the existing network to...

EMT light vs full breakfast in 1ST

All booked for GBP 66.00 - not bad for only a few weeks notice. Are these trains likely to be busy, medium-load or almost empty in 1ST?

EMT light vs full breakfast in 1ST

Thanks for the interesting replies. :) My next question: if I take the 0856 from St Pancras to Sheffield and the 1729 back to London are these likely to be HSTs or Meridians? If Meridians, how many cars?

EMT light vs full breakfast in 1ST

I am probably going to take an EMT operated service from St Pancras to Sheffield soon and am looking at the 8.56am departure. I note with interest from this page that there is a complimentary breakfast in 1ST but that all northbound services offer a light breakfast, with a full breakfast only...

How to convert Nectar points to VTEC travel

I am inclined to convert GBP 50.00 of Nectar points to GBP 75.00 of VTEC travel under an Advance fare. But I do not see the mechanism for achieving this. Am I being dim or does this facility not exist yet? Can anybody see how to do it? Many thanks in advance! :)

Does the East Coast Mainline sit entirely west of the prime meridian?

I was pondering last night ... does the East Coast Mainline ever cross east of the prime meridian and enter the eastern hemisphere? I don't think it does, but am thinking that it just might somewhere between King's Cross and Peterborough. This question is just to satisfy my own curiosity, so...

Do you think VTEC will hold a 'launch' sale?

I wonder if VTEC will mark their new franchise with a sale? I have a choice for some upcoming travel: i) book a 1ST Single at GBP 44.50 now and earn enough EC Rewards points for a "free" STD single, which I would use at a weekend and upgrade to 1ST with the GBP 25 supplement (total spend =...

East Coast walk-up fares cheaper if bought online in advance

A Super Off Peak Return from King's Cross to Newcastle is GBP 129.10. A Super Off Peak Single from King's Cross to Newcastle and back is GBP 64.15 each way. The price for two of these tickets is GBP 128.30. So two singles are cheaper than a return. Any idea why? :) (I note with interest that...

Why do you use the train?

    i) I do not have a driving license and have no wish to qualify for one. ii) In principle I have no objection to coach services, but trains are just so much faster. iii) I am based in zone 1 so there is no problem getting to any major rail terminus and from there to anywhere in the country.

Consequences of drinking wine or beer on a 'dry train'

In the end the person travelling was able to access the train unimpeded because, although searches were in progress at the ground floor entrance to the King's Cross platforms, they were not in progress at the upper level entrance.

London orbit on Overground - what is the correct fare?

If I go all the way around the London Overground, getting on at Clapham Junction and getting off there too, what is the correct fare using Oyster? Would touching out and then in again at Highbury & Islington suffice?

Consequences of drinking wine or beer on a 'dry train'

What, if any, are the consequences of taking a glass worth of wine or beer onto an EC dry train and drinking it?

Ideas for alternative ways of running the railways

Commercial Like others I support a 100% e-ticket system, with smart cards offering the ability to PAYG and load up specific tickets for specific trains. I would have one railway and bus operator, owned by the state but with independence enshrined by statute, a bit like the Bank of England...

Victoria Line - why & where do the lines switch sides?

Heading northbound from Pimlico to King's Cross-St Pancras the doors open on the right hand side and a passenger walking straight out and through the atrium will find herself on the other platform. At King's Cross however the northbound service's doors open on the left hand side yet a...
