Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

'Treatment' to tackle dry soil - what will the effect when/if we get wet soil again? A reverse effect or has the sub-structure settled such that it won't expand in the same pattern again?

    Off the road at Paddington

Fascinating that not one passenger is looking at it!

Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

Well, I have had a mis-apprehension corrected - thanks! An interesting thing that occurs to me is that there is/was a graffiti vandal who tags '10 foot' - I has assumed it referred to him/her being between the edge of the formation (i.e. wall or fence) and the first track.

Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

Sorry - I thought the reference was to the following 1K50, which stopped several hundred metres behind. 1786720468 I had understood that these were the definitions - four foot - between the rails, six foot - between adjacent tracks, ten foot - between the track and the edge of the...

Avoid travelling until further notice 13 Aug 2026 - Seen at Three Bridges

It's just all-too-typical of the information regime on today's railway - slack, unhelpful and often plain wrong. We squander the information-dissemination technology and systems we have by providing grim stuff like this.

Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

Not sure I understand - no other train was anywhere near on the same track, and the following one could not just 'overtake' on the other track to cuadee any ballast to fly up. The derailed coach hasn't gone down an embankment; it is virtually upright on the ten foot.

Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

Indeed - unless a train crashed into the back of the derailed train well after the incident (which I am sure would have been reported by now), the photo of the derailed coach should be evidence enough of no other train being involved!

Why is TfL's web site rubbish

Unless you are using one of the very few less frequent routes (Chesham, perhaps) then timetables are not required. 99.9% of users would never use a timetable per se. As a ex-LU/TfL railway planner (not involved with the web site) the ethos has always been the provide a turn-up-and-go service...

What are those train shakers at London Euston for?

Waterloo used to have them at the stops on the low-numbered platforms, but I think they went with track renewal years ago. They used to cause a rumble, but no 'shaking'.

How is a commuter only train defined?

The original definition of a commuter was a rail traveller who used a season ticket, I believe. By that definition, no UK train can qualify I imagine. The media generally refer to all passengers as commuters. Even if the definition is slackened to mean passengers travelling to/from work, I...

SWR Portsmouth services diverted via Oxshott on 3/4 August

Agreed, but of course any possible embarrasment would lie at NR's door, rather than the TOC's. GBR, being only an amalgam of TOCs (even when it has any influence), won't have a significantly different interface with the already publicly-owned NR. There will still not be anything like a...

SWR Portsmouth services diverted via Oxshott on 3/4 August

No, sadly, I think we are entering a Mediterranean climate regime. It's worth bearing mind, though, that the sun's actual strength (i.e. solar energy output) on a cloudless day won't increase, even if more cloudless summers make the air temperature a few degrees higher than now. Rail...

SWR Portsmouth services diverted via Oxshott on 3/4 August

Apart from the general service smoothing potential, that's a lot to pay to replace one temperamental crossing, especially when the alternative routeing seem to be acceptable even with DR!

SWR Portsmouth services diverted via Oxshott on 3/4 August

I happened to be passing Clandon today and stopped off for a quick look, based on what Traksy was saying about diversions. A couple of up diversions, but the wonderful irony was that...it rained! Only briefly, but enough to make the heat-related diversions seem slightly humorous (it was much...

SWR Portsmouth services diverted via Oxshott on 3/4 August

Given that the change is a planned one, not an emergency, this seems strange. 1785760259 I can't imagine how anyone wanting to get between Woking and Guildford could avoid being delayed by way more than 15 minutes. However, my main interest was how the signallers, etc., deal with the issue -...

SWR Portsmouth services diverted via Oxshott on 3/4 August

Ok, so I am wondering how this significant change to services would normally be shown on RTT?

SWR Portsmouth services diverted via Oxshott on 3/4 August

Isn't that unusual? Seems like a clear case for VST to me. Not only a different route used, but Woking missed as a station stop, so not just a minor alteration.
