Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

They should put a single first section in the centre, or abolish it altogether. The current arrangement is ludicrous.

Is Great Northern potentially “false advertising” First Class?

You should try my line - the North Downs! The provision of first class has been on and off so many times in the last several years that I don't think even the staff know what is happening. They certainly don't enforce it. I know because I am willing to bet that school children don't have...

GWR two passengers left behind at Paddington

I thought Southern was 30 seconds - it may have changed. In any case, I don't think the GWR train in question was a 'commuter" working. Others may have slumped to 40 seconds now as well, I suppose. I wonder if GBR might standardise it...

GWR two passengers left behind at Paddington

In the mix with all the other stuff here, I imagine GWR's (unique?) 40-second doors closure policy may be scrutinised... 1787573598 Of course - all is well, then...

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Thanks - I happily sit corrected! One thing I'm also unclear about - is the 27C the air temperature or rail temperature?

All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

That is pathetic, but nothing about the abysmal information system on our railways today surprises me anymore.

All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

I doubt if any TOC bosses care much anymore, knowing they will be taken in-house soon. Things are withering badly, with more and more bad decisions being revealed.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Apologies if it has been mentioned already, but the CCTV from the rear of a previous train shows a bag, or bags, of what is presumably ballast standing by the line at the point of the kink. Does this indicate preparation for a job to be done (i.e. with knowledge of the defect) but yet to be...

    Redhill - Tonbridge outage 19 Aug 2026

With an hourly off peak service I don't imagine there would be much of a reduction!

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

It isn't a road beneath and, in any case, any strike hard enough to deform both tracks would certainly have required closure, not to mention demolishing the parapets in the process. I also think we would have heard about such a bridge strike by now.

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

BBC News has an updated story, incuding CCTV from a previous train, which shows a slight kink in the track and what appears to be a similar kink in the other line's track, albeit less severe. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gx12v8z51o

Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

It managed to lose nearly two and a half hours en route, too.

Are the recent derailments indicative of poor performance from Network Rail?

Quite - if, for example, track undulations are caused by widespread ground drying and shifting (as with the WoE route), what 'maintenance' could be reasonably expected - soaking miles of formation with water repeatedly to keep it intact? I think not.

Also my thinking about the Lewes derailment.

Disruption at St Pancras (Possible Bomb Threat) 18/08/26

I trust they also received a parking ticket (plus fly-tipping charges)...

Is 5mph the slowest speed limit possible?

Are those the only speed signs in the UK in km/h, or are all HS1's also thus?

Is 5mph the slowest speed limit possible?

Does that have a standard speed restriction sign, and if so does it read '0.5'?

Are the recent derailments indicative of poor performance from Network Rail?

I saw a quote from a BBC News interview where the rail industry interviewee said it was "too early to speculate" - no; that's the point of speculation - it's never too early!

Derailment at Wickford - Friday 14th August 2026

On the other hand, both incidents were relatively minor in terms of injuries, and severe weather/climate can easily be defended as an 'act of God' and outside the reasonable control of the railway. The ultra-rarity of such incidents can also be used as a robust defence.
