Very unlikely to be quicker to get the tube 1 stop. Not easy to separate main line from tube entrances, for example the entrance on Waterloo Road goes down to the Underground and up to the main line station.
I’m a fan of false destinations. I’m on a Reigate and Gatwick Airport (all stations from Purley) and I’m sure there will be Gatwick passengers who will get on, take an hour to get there and wonder. 35 mins via the faster trains.
The peak hour break was from the 1920s onwards. I never travelled up on the all stations (and yes, it was, for a period all stations) because it was easier to change at East Croydon for a Thameslink train. Going south the reality was that it was often no slower to get an all stations service...
