Trams and bike priority. Trams are not incompatible with bikes or pedestrianised areas because the swept paths are fixed and, as any cyclist in Amsterdam can show, a sensible cyclist crosses tram tracks safely.
Still in a railway context - the Porter and Sorter at East Croydon (name reflecting both railway and former Crown Post Office at E Croydon) has the unofficial name of Platform 7. E Croydon has six platforms (there was a parcels loop with a “platform” inaccessible to passengers at one point.
I can remember an early/mid 80s diversion (pre-electrification) when the up Hastings train definitely went through the middle roads at Redhill, but did stop at East Croydon. I wasn't a track basher those days, so the annoyance was more about taking longer to get to East Croydon (where it did...
I’ve had a conductor on what I’d describe as an inter urban service in Guayaquil, Ecuador in about 2008. Bus was single deck and manual. Also, much longer ago, c 1989 on a SITA bus between Amalfi and Sorrento. Not much good on current services I’m afraid.
East Croydon 2-5 are bidirectional. 2 is currently used in both directions; 5 has terminating and down services, but has historically also had up ones. 3 and 4 are only used both ways in cases of disruption.
You may need to clarify further, because virtually every terminus/bay platform can be...
It won’t be much more than a glimpse. There are plenty of buildings in the way and a large hedge on the Brighton Road side of the ground (which is also the direction for the station).
Sutton’s close to the Wall of Death. Probably not visible but trains can be heard. Incidentally Kenley morphed into Southern Railway and Kenley either late 20th or early 21st century.
Some comments feel like the timetabling version of “why can’t they have more coaches at the front”. Here it’s “why can’t they have a 24 coach train at 17:33?”
On a non-fruity theme is there another sequence in which two stations “named” after a single place have one named after another in between as well ie like Hackney Central, Homerton, Hackney Wick?
The Southern Railway’s routes were very much those of the pre-Grouping railways. If it didn’t exist in 1900 it tended not to exist in 1939. The same applies to the Southern Region of BR. Of course there are exceptions (Thanet for example) but not many.
Ie using the South Eastern and Chatham main line from Tonbridge? As stated above the Southern went via Haywards Heath; doubt in pre-grouping days the LBSCR and SECR/SER would have contemplated a using each others’ lines.
Good point well made. The South Coast town market has definitely grown as an outpost of Brighton and as those who moved there in the 50s and 60s have died and been replaced by younger exiles from London. Coastway East has a leisure market as well - the busiest non-strike train I’ve been on since...
If small is two 5 carriage platforms then much of the Windrush and Mildmay lines of the London Overground. If small is passenger usage then exclude them as passenger numbers put some (eg Hackney Central and Homerton) into the top 150 GB stats.
Trains to Ramsgate via Sandwich are advertised as being to Sandwich (when East of Ashford) to prevent people getting on them and wasting 30 mins when they should have used the faster service via Canterbury.
