Why did the South Eastern Division not get Mk3 stock in the 1980s?

Yes, the “Sussex Coast Networker” as my alternative history story called them.

Why did the South Eastern Division not get Mk3 stock in the 1980s?

I think the Wessex Electrics could have worked on the fast Charing Cross to Thanet trains to give it a more spruced up feel.

    GWR to Kingston?

I think Brompton and Vauxhall were other possible termini.

    Potential South London improvement ideas?

Here’s a thought, if CARS cannot happen, could the East Croydon terminators from London Bridge and Watford be extended to Gatwick? At least that’ll give the local stations a direct Gatwick service without having to improve physical connections at East Croydon to terminate more local trains...

Avanti take needless announcements to a new level

Exactly you shouldn't have to do that. I agree it works, but its a sorry state of affairs when a pair of headphones is now mandatory for going on a train.

Avanti take needless announcements to a new level

I would switch to cars. That would be the last straw. HM Treasury and the DfT are trashing our railways

Just for fun - a new railway after HS2

I think a high speed line to the West is a good idea that’s not talked enough

What could an “ideal” Bristol service recast look like?

Half hourly Bristol to Birmingham Electrostar service calling at most stations. Ditto for a Cardiff to Exeter service Frequent electric stopper from Weston to Gloucester

HS2 Reset: Evidence to Transport Committee - 9 July 2025 "Total overspend on high-speed rail could be as much as 100%"

HS2 should have gone all the way to Scotland from the start. A through station at Birmingham with an actual interchange with New Street to connect with XC services. And a HS3 to funnel in the Northern cities into a new airport hub at Manchester. It is infuriating beyond measure.

Old NSE/SWT/SWR diagrams for Bristol Temple Meads-London Waterloo

How long did the journey take? I regret not doing it

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

Yes same over on Southern. The Hounslow Loop as well is still only 2 an hour.

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

I too have wondered whether 4 8 car Electrostars an hour from Bristol to Birmingham calling at most stations might be better than a high speed line. But I think a high speed line on this corridor might still work to simply release the capacity to provide such a service. Plus it’ll take XC...

National Rail suburban networks in London

I was going to make a thread about this specifically why the GWR has to this day such a spare suburban network. Formed manly by odd branches. I seem to recall reading they were planning a line to Chiswick and Hounslow, was this true?

    What exactly were brake vans?

I remember seeing them in Hornby catalogues. And coaches called things like ‘1st brake open’. Did they actually help the train brake?

In the 1930, the LMS began experimenting with electrification and ordered a small fleet of American smaller GG1s for hauling suburban services around Manchester. These locos were finally withdrawn in the late 80s but saw use by Network SouthEast on ‘Northampton Cobbler’ services

    NSE to Silverlink “Gap”

The local stations on the Southern network have plenty of peeling paint on lampposts and such revealing NSE red underneath. I loved the Silverlink brand as a child, but getting rid of NSE so quickly was such a waste.

Avanti take needless announcements to a new level

I know we complain about announcements on this forum but they genuinely are getting worse. At London Bridge station they’ve not got a verbose announcement on the escalators telling you to face forward and hold the handrail. Worse still at Maidenhead station, where an announcement plays...
