Why I prefer to use a ticket office and obtain a physical ticket

Quite right. I resent the growing expectation that I need to carry a mobile phone at all times. My mobile seems to behave like a newborn baby - needing constant nursing and attention. When it's not running out of battery (or mysteriously not charging overnight, despite the cable being plugged...

    Marches line- singing conductor

Please, for the love of God, no. Although given that most carriages at the weekend appear to be pre-installed with at least one raucous hen party, I don't suppose it will make that much difference.

Train change on a through service

Happened Friday evening from P5 to P3 at Shrewsbury, with effectively two trainloads packed into a 3-car 175 (unusually) from Birmingham. Bowing to the inevitable, staff just opened the ticket barriers to let the tidal wave through. However my sympathies are limited. There were rather a lot of...

    Post Covid Passenger Rebound

But should we really be encouraging more leisure travel? Leisure demand is often wildly unpredictable. Moreover it doesn't pay its way. Since capacity is finite, surely the railway should be reserved for essential travel, not moving assorted hedonists and layabouts around the country. Doubtless...

Things you don't see people wearing any more (or that have made a comeback)

Apparently "Y2K aesthetic" is one of the hot fashion trends of spring 2022. Genuinely. I agree that 1970s babies have never succumbed to this sort of thing. Certainly I have never dressed up like a member of Slade.

Why was Silverlink (train operating company) called Silverlink?

I always assumed it was named after the historic locomotive. Indeed in Tamworth there is a housing estate with a Silver Link Road, close to roads called Ivatt, Gresley, Deltic, Collett, Stephenson Close, Pullman Close and Engine Lane, plus a few others.

    Trivia: Railway related murals

As mentioned earlier, Wolverhampton station does indeed have a mural. Here's a part of it, featuring some of the city's more celebrated residents setting off on their travels. (Credit Matt Hyde / Flickr)

Potential DfT/ORR Consultation On Diversionary Routes/Rail Replacement Bus Services?

Perhaps I didn't explain it well - I'm sure the people doing work on the front line are performing as well as they can, although I've been caught up in many shambolic bus substitutions over the years. However few other public-facing services seem to shut down so frequently and drastically as...

Potential DfT/ORR Consultation On Diversionary Routes/Rail Replacement Bus Services?

Out of curiosity, what metric is used to show whether "they do a great job"? Because if it produces a solution that at least 55% of customers hate so much that they refuse to give their custom, it suggests that someone, somewhere is not doing a "great job".

Can big stations put up notices showing which platform for which destinations, like small stations?

Also Church Stretton, Ludlow and Hereford, but oddly Shrewsbury isn't there.

Shrewsbury to Birmingham Advance not valid?

Obviously this was incompetence, but it's a shame, as the station staff at Shrewsbury (ticket office, gateline, platforms) do generally seem polite, friendly and customer-focussed.

    Which tramways have you used?

UK cliff railways: Bridgnorth, Centre for Alternative Technology Overseas not on list: Vienna, Ghent

Trains told to get rid of torrent of 'Tannoy spam'

Ambulance-chasing lawyers are often cited as a reason for tannoy spam. But what recent cases are there? e.g. of a passenger injury through not 'minding the gap', where they claim that they were not warned. (I'm not disputing what you say BTW, as I think the reasoning is very feasible, given...

TRIVIA: Lines with no closed stations

On a related note, I've wondered about the WCML either side of Birmingham New Street. Between Brum and Cov, no stations have closed - in fact with the opening of International - the number of stations has increased. But on the Wolverhampton side, lots of stations have closed over the years -...

    Northern Overcrowding

"Massive investment in new trains over the last 25 years"? I commute every day and do a lot of leisure travel in the west midlands and mid Wales . Almost all my journeys over the last few months have been in vehicles that are 30 or more years old - 150s, 153s, 158s. Admittedly some have...

    Cambrian Line delays

Birmingham/Telford/Shrewsbury has been horrendous in the last week for cancellations and short forms, both WMT and TfW. I assume it's connected to half term. I'm hardly surprised that Covid is running rampant among local schoolchildren when I see 2 or 3 trains worth of passengers packing onto a...

Passenger "Mutiny" Due To Missed Stop At Swindon

So having read through the entire thread, I can conclude that absolutely no improvements will happen, and this sort of incident will recur in the future. No other industry in the UK gets away with producing so many regular customer service catastrophes.
