how the uk would be prepared to live if a vaccine couldnt be found

My personal view. A virus with a mortality rate of 0.06% of the population, nearly all of them vulnerable in some way, does not merit any action other than vulnerable people being isolated. Yes lock up nursing homes etc but the rest of us should just get on with life and accept that for the non...

What incentive is there to go by train?

Have you ever tried travelling in/out Manchester in the peak on a Northern or TfW service pre Covid? There is nothing pleasurable about that! Don't get me started on the P14 at Piccadilly.

    Northern 'Flexi-season tickets'

TfW have a similar product called Multiflex. I used it for a while when I was still working in Manchester but not frequently enough to merit a season ticket.

What incentive is there to go by train?

It was Helsby to Manchester every day for 5 years then I changed roles in the same company and started to cover the whole UK, so it became a mix of commuting to Manchester a couple of days a week and flying/driving/train all over the UK. You soon get sick of travelling so much.

What incentive is there to go by train?

One of the reasons I packed in my last job in Manchester was the commute. Not the only reason but the packed trains, increasing costs and unreliable service over a 9 year period eventually got to me. The incentive to use rail was not having to drive on some of the most congested motorways in the...

Buying house backing onto train tracks...

Our old family house backed on to a freight line with regular traffic. The garden was about 30yrds long and you could feel every wheel go over every joint in the track when you were in the house. That said you do get used to it. Would I buy a house right next to a very busy station on a very...

Timetable Changes for the Decarbonisation Agenda

That is what many commercial passenger aircraft do. Have you noticed flight times are slower now than they used to be? Aircraft pilots try to minimise fuel usage by flying slower but more economically. If rail did the same the savings on carbon would increase but maybe services would be lost on...

    Merseyrail Class 777 introduction updates

Does anyone know when a unit with batteries installed suitable for mainline running will be delivered as I thought I had read somewhere the battery option had been pulled, as least for now.

    Have you had the virus?

Something went through our workplace late December and early Jan. Several people, including me, had the same symptoms; very high temperature, hacking cough and tiredness. I had a couple of nights where I couldn't breath properly and ended up pinching my wife's Asthma inhaler to ease the...

    Northern Consultation Dec 2020

We'll have to wait and see. I no longer commute by rail any more but still retain an interest in this route having endured the misery of peak time travel on it for 9 years. I wonder which TfW services are to be changed?

It looks like. The Helsby to E Port goes back to a twice a day shuttle by the looks of it.

    Stations to avoid and why

Avoid Helsby if you are a person of reduced mobility. You can only access Platform 1 without having to resort to the footbridge. No lifts or barrow crossings. No station toilets. That said it is a pleasant place to be and there is a nice tap room open from Thursday to Sunday.

What is your earliest memory of travelling on a train?

Early 1970's between Helsby and Runcorn. Used to visit my Aunt who lived in the Old Town. Services stopped in the mid 1970's so my then is was the bus until my Mum learned to drive in 1978.

Helsby to Rock Ferry. Used to be frequent, now there are a couple of trains a day as far as Ellesmere Port.
