Absolutely, great to see the conversion to independent registration marching along. They've converted a lot more of them to MIRs between OOC & Paddington as well, and done rather a lot west of Southall (including converting a headspan to a mid-point anchor portal of all things!)
Interesting tidbit I saw from drone pictures posted to Network Rail's website - OLE structures in use for a temporary cable bridge! Said supports are highlighted in green below.
The supports were, sadly, never going to be anything but temporary - the pair at the south end don't quite line up...
Truth be told, the trams do use some of the old GCR alignment already - the stretch of the Clifton South branch from Wilford Lane to Ruddington Lane runs on that rooute.
They did resignal over Xmas didn't they? If so, the OLE teams have likely headed further south towards Micklefield as there was at least one tension length on the Up Leeds (between Mile Hill/Laith Staid Lane & Barkston Ash if I recall) that couldn't be wired at the same time as the other parts...
No idea, but based on Kings Cross, it could well be UKMS (Series 1, Series 2 and SICAT) cherry-picked to suit, or it could be like-for-like swapouts with Mk3D or UK1 - it's down to the route asset engineers at the end of the day.
I'm sure both the Piccadilly approach and the lines through New Street have had sporadic contact wire renewals, but AFAIK there's been no wholesale renewal of the equipment (e.g. catenary, cantilevers, any tensioning arrangements) since the 1960s. Lots of oxidised copper through New Street in...
I can attest to the "secondary means of escape" requirement; we had to have those on the NLP stations. As long as there are two separate thresholds to cross (even something as simplistic as two different gaps in a platform boundary fence) then you're OK, but on embankments/in cuttings/in...
Precisely, although none of the services that currently run from Leeds to Bradford are electric the whole way, even with the intervention of the wires here. At least Blackpool North - York could run on the wires for the majority of the route, if they went bi-modal.
You can thank/blame Taskmaster S13 E10 for your sick bag requirements (Christie, B., Love, J. and Duker, S.) for that phrase! ;)
Excellent point raised about the feeding possibilities around Sheffield - Brinsworth 400kV, Pitsmoor 275kV and Wincobank 275kV all seem possible to connect to for...
Absolutely - I think Sheffield ought to be one of the areas looked at first (at least for design) as it's very complex, in a constrained area with myriad tunnels, bridges and other clearance issues to be taken into account. Having a "one team, one dream" mentality is paramount for the...
Knottingley & Pontefract (all 3 stations) appear to lose out as well.
I have heard rumours that Sheff - Doncaster becomes part of the tram-train network, thereby extending the wires east, but at this point they're just that - rumours.
Note for the mods: until such time as further details of schemes are announced, this is remaining in Speculative Discussion.
One for @GRALISTAIR and the other OLE fans on the forum...
Given the recent announcement of electrification works around Leeds as part of "NPR Phase 1", I've put the...
Another fact about Biggleswade TSC - it was actually replaced in the late 90s/early 00s as the neutral section was repositioned for whatever reason.
When I used to live in Peterborough, I lived very close to the Delivery Unit depot and saw the old Dunton FS building in there (this was circa...
Looks like a Permanently Earthed Section (PES) to me, albeit a temporary PES. Might be to make sure there's no stray currents while they finish the job.
