    East Coast wouldn't excess

Interesting. It seems EC has a different way of dealing with over distance excesses. In the manual it does say once the journey has started then if you are travelling over distance then a single fare is payable from where you ticket ends to where you are travelling. I know this rule did...

    East Coast wouldn't excess

The guard was correct. Over distance excesses can only be bought on train if there was no opportunity to purchase before boarding Also the manual says that singles can only be excessed to returns if done before travel.

Overnight Break of Journey - Off Peak Day Returns

Yes but in those circumstances you are not actually breaking your journey. If you travel on the last train of the day but are unable to get to your destination then travelling on the first train of the day to complete your journey has always been ok as you have not actually broken your journey.

London to Castle Cary valid via Taunton ?

In the past I thought that there was an easement to allow people travelling to Castle Cary to travel via Taunton. The service to Castle Cary is not very frequent and it can sometimes be quicker to go to Taunton and back. Anyway I was looking at the easements and I cant seem to find one...

    Fog and Level Crossings

As would seem to be the case as the OP said there were severe speed restrictions passing the crossings.

Booking Caledonian Sleeper using FIP pass

Its not surprising they dont know what you are talking about there is no such thing as a FIP pass. Assuming you work for an overseas railway company you may be entitled to a coupon which gives free travel in the UK and you will just have to pay for the berth. If you dont get a coupon...

    EMT Groupsave

Dont know why it does not appear in the booking engine but its in the fares manual. Ticket type is GR4 and priced at 19.60. In reply to the second part of your questions could you be issued with CDR with a Group save discount applied. The answer is no. EMT do not accept Group save...

Quote from Modern Railways on advance fares

I should imagine the ticket he had was an off peak, super off peak or anytime and the ticket checker had not noticed.

Plymouth to Cardiff fare set by ATW ???

Just been looking at some fare and noticed that the Plymouth to Cardiff fare is set by ATW. That seems crazy as they only cover the Newport to Cardiff bit. I would have thought it would have been XC or FGW. Any body know why this is ?

    Am I allowed this journey?

Of course you would have to spend 5 hours at Hereford station from 0032 to 0525 - do you really want to do that !!

    penalty fare appeal - chances?

Sorry there is no chance BTP will give you a crime reference. Also by your own admission even if you had the ticket you had already travelled beyond the your original destination. The whole point of a penalty fare is not to get into these long drawn out discussions.

    Thames Rover

Thats wrong Im afraid. As th OP will be travelling on the 0921 CDR is available at £8.40 so 5 days would be £42.00 as against £56.20 for a weekly season.

How many TOCs run DOO trains?

Thats wrong I'm afraid. All Turbo services from Paddington to Oxford (and Banbury) are DOO. If there is a guard on board then they will only do revenue duties.

I picked up the incorrect railcard - help requested.

Well i am guessing that the penalty fare was for the first part of the journey and the 75 ticket was the fare from the next station to your destination. Really we need more details of the journey and what the 75 pound ticket was for but at the moment I cant see any reason why you should not...

    A tale of 2 trains

That must be first class in the picture. Also the problem with the loading guage in the UK means we can never have such spacious trains as on the continent. Our railways were built to carry coal trucks - the ones on the continent were built to carry armies around.
