Was watching the Green Signals podcast where Richard Bowker was looking around Charing Cross. I seem to recall that an engineer said that they had reduced the number of point ends from (I think) 18 to 16. Has the layout changed slightly; anyone know?
Is this ever used by scheduled services nowadays?
And why does it have a trap point at the Country end, but not one at the London end? Is it because it's only signalled for Hove/Brighton-bound traffic, so in effect it's a catch point? Just a wondering...
We're all familiar with the inter-regional letters introduced with the 4-digit headcodes c1960. E, M, N, O, S. But why "V" for Western Region-bound trains? Was it because of possible confusion with the "M" for London Midland, if "W" had been chosen?

I can understand, to a degree, why some 5-car IETs run around with their coupling doors open, as they might be required to couple/uncouple with other units as part of their daily diagrams.
But why are some 9-car units running like this? They don't have to couple/uncouple. Is it a maintenance or...
Saw a couple of Mendip-bound trains last week; in both cases the trains were double-headed with both locos at the front. Has Freightliner stopped the idea of having the second loco positioned in the middle of the formation?

Just a quickie; asking for my brother-in-law. They had travelled from Bodmin Parkway to Padd; held split tickets (splitting at Swindon). Train arrived 37 late at Padd. Would delay repay be only on the Swindon - Padd portion of the split? Thanks.
Another current thread (about Nottingham being out on a limb) mentioned the demise of stations with the Victoria suffix.
Can anyone added to this list?
Still open:
London Victoria
Manchester Victoria - though a shadow of its former self
Southend Victoria
Closed and long gone:
Norwich Victoria...
Was watching an episode of Law & Order last night. Someone had driven onto a railway line attempting suicide; some 15 were killed in the resulting crash. But there was no involvement (or mention) of the British Transport Police.
I'd have thought they'd be involved quite extensively in such a case.
66001 is 25 this month - delivered on 18th April 1998. Is it possible to track the moves of one loco in a month?
Here it is in Westbury Down yard on 23rd April. Then it attached itself to the rear of 66120+66041 working 0V14 2004 Eastleigh - Margam.
Does anyone know its moves from 18th and...
Stainless steel drums of waste (each weighing around 1 tonne) are being railed from Dorset to Cumbria. They travel from the Winfrith Magnox site to Drigg, via Crewe. A number of such runs were made last year, with the wagons TNT by 68s; the train running down in the morning with empty wagons and...
