    Freight at Cheltenham Spa

I'd seen some interesting workings with quite a wide variety too, filmed just down the line from Cheltenham by someone on YT and thought just to go for a spin on the train somewhere different for a change. I usually do Cardiff / Newport / Bristol Parkway sort of places.

    Freight at Cheltenham Spa

Ok went for spin here and it was a disappointing day for freight I must say. Did see 56303 light engine in DCR green livery and a 66 on northbound coal but that was all in a 3 hr period. I thought I may have seen a bit more than this?

    Purchasing tickets?

+1 on that if it's the guy I'm thinking of. I once told him I'd left a coat on an HST on a Sunday and he phoned ahead and got the coat actually put on a Carmarthen bound HST and I had the item back the same day! Very helpful chap.

    Purchasing tickets?

Thanks, by the way, we change at Cardiff and Bristol Parkway, does anyone know what train the CrossCountry service is, that runs Penzance to Glasgow Central? Is it an HST? This is the one I'd be on - 12.40 off BPW headed for Cheltenham.

    Purchasing tickets?

Hi, was just wondering if you can buy tickets between two stations that are not the one you are at? e.g. At Carmarthen can you ask the assistant for tickets between Cardiff and Cheltenham? It is only to avoid rushing at Cardiff to buy the tickets. £12 cheaper buying CMN - CDF + CDF - CNM.

    Timber trains - Baglan Bay?

Thanks for that, yes the Afan Forest is a large commission like our plantation near Carmarthen - Brechfa Forest. Log trains used to run from Carmarthen 15+ yrs ago. Still, huge lorry loads come out of Brechfa though.

    Timber trains - Baglan Bay?

Ah yes, there was supposed to be a wood chip burning plant built on the old Coedbach washery site in Kidwelly but the plans fell through. I had this still in my mind when I heard Colas were running log trains to Baglan and thought it was a similar power station in use there. So where do the logs...

    Timber trains - Baglan Bay?

The Colas freight working from Baglan Bay to Chirk has fully laden logs. Ok so no surprise there, but I sort of had the impression that some form of bio-mass wood fired power station was operating at Baglan Bay, and that you'd imagine that trains would be taking logs to it rather than from...

Cheltenham Spa - going for food?

I've been on Google street view, is this Fish bar / Southern fried chicken place you mention called "Popeye's" ? Is it one of those "evening only" opening take aways or a lunchtime opener?

Cheltenham Spa - going for food?

Was planning a spin to Cheltenham and wondered if there is a chippy or similar eatery close by the station?

"The Scenic Wales Explorer - 29/09/12"

Most tours that are destined for Tenby either get cancelled or diverted. It is becoming the norm!

    Tickets valid on Cross Country?

I don't know that part of the area ticketing wise, but could you not purchase an Off Peak ticket to save some money? Off peak not available from Carmarthen to Cardiff. Only from Swansea to Cardiff, and it is hardly worth the bother of getting off at Swansea to purchase separate tickets as...

    Tickets valid on Cross Country?

Ok, can someone clear this up for me - Last weekend I had a train from Carmarthen to Newport, and I got off the FGW service at Cardiff as I needed something there. I then caught the Cross Country Cardiff - Nottingham train on to Newport. I was unsure about tickets so asked the guard before...

    MotoRail stock at Canton?

Passed the yard outside Cardiff Central today and there were four Moto Rail vehicles in FGW "fag packet" or similar livery parked up there. Any idea what these are there for?

    Freightliner workings passing Cardiff?

Ok I think there is an aggregate working from Neath Abbey Wharf that passes Cardiff, but is there one from the Valleys? On Wiki, (I know it isn't always accurate) it says that Freightliner run stone trains to the Tower Colliery site (reading about "Aberdare Railway Station").

How packed can a train be? Beach Break Live

It all happened so fast I'm not sure how many got off, or attempted to, I was just looking at all the available doors and it looked impossible to clamber on (had a 9yr old with me too). We waited for the next one (16.59) which was a 3 car 175 but no where near as busy although all seats were...

How packed can a train be? Beach Break Live

People seemed to be holding onto baggage to stop it interfering with the doors closing as it was pushing against them.
