Tickets valid on Cross Country?

Ok, can someone clear this up for me - Last weekend I had a train from Carmarthen to Newport, and I got off the FGW service at Cardiff as I needed something there. I then caught the Cross Country Cardiff - Nottingham train on to Newport. I was unsure about tickets so asked the guard before getting on and I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was something about you'll be ok because it is a Saturday. So if you bought tickets at the machine for general travel, would they be no good on a Cross Country service on weekdays?

Normal standard anytime day return from the TVM

With the ticket, you can use any service between the origin and your destination as long as your return back on the same day.

I don't know that part of the area ticketing wise, but could you not purchase an Off Peak ticket to save some money?

Off peak not available from Carmarthen to Cardiff. Only from Swansea to Cardiff, and it is hardly worth the bother of getting off at Swansea to purchase separate tickets as the saving is less than a pound.

Tickets are valid on any operator unless a restriction is "printed on the ticket" (NRCoC).

It does not matter what day of the week it is, so that answer is very puzzling.

Yes, this is puzzling. The Anytime Day Return from Carmarthen to Newport is £22.30 and has no restrictions on trains or break of journey.

My guess would have been that the XC guard may have thought that the OP was concerned about time restrictions. There seems to be no indication that they looked at the ticket. However, there aren't any time restrictions between Cardiff and Newport as only Anytime tickets are available for such a short journey!

Indeed. I didn't take too kindly to a FGW employee at Paddington telling me that I was due a Penalty Fare for trying to exit the station (not having travelled or being within a compulsory ticket area) before or after he told me he "was just joking."
