    Midland Railway mileage diagrams

Are these available anywhere on line? I’m interested to know how far it would be from Harrington (Beds) to Horton in Ribblesdale via Leicester, Toton, the Sheffield “New Road”, Cudworth, with a reversal at Leeds, Aire Valley route, Skipton and Settle. Apollogies if I missed one or two...

    Strangest long distance through trains

Another Table 49 gem: Blackpool North (?) to Cambridge. At least I think it originated there as I boarded at Preston, back in September 1989. Could it have alternatively originated from Barrow in Furness? Other gems: Whitehaven to Manchester Airport Leeds to St Pancras via Nottingham...

Were the 1950s 4 wheel railbuses a total failure?

Wasn't the Witham to Braintree branch worked by railbuses at one point? That line survived and prospered.

Non-availability of 1st Advance Singles EUS to CAR (direct; no changes)

Hi, I've been using LNER and GWR sites. The latter comes up with 1st anytimes, but the former doesn't. Thanks for the Trainsplit tip; will try that.

Non-availability of 1st Advance Singles EUS to CAR (direct; no changes)

I have been searching for 1st advance singles from Euston to Carlisle (direct); not date fixed yet, but have been searching up to 4 weeks in advance. There appears to be none of this ticket type available; only 1st anytime. However Std advance singles have some availability? Does anyone know why...

Entire 800/801/802 fleet stood down for safety checks

Having worked as an engineer in aerospace + other applications with high stressed components, and also having done lab-based fatigue experiments, I think their is too much faith placed in the answers which FEA packages produce to ensure stresses which are "acceptable" and which are not assumed...

Why is the Maryport and Carlisle so poorly covered in print?

Aspatria Tunnel (with its notoriously tight clearance); the only one on the M&C.

    Steam coal

A few questions about this solid fuel: The dry steam coals from South Wales can be quite friable; is this why the GWR didn't use coaling towers? Barnsley (Grimethorpe?) was a source of steam coal for other Big Four; how does it compare in its handling and burning characteristics with the South...

30ft Bullhead Rail - How much is left?

I bashed the branch line to Arcachon (near Bordeaux) in 1998; seemed to be almost all bullhead. 1602856692 Oops; I meant 1988.

Previously staffed stations Lancaster - Carlisle via Barrow

I hiked the clifftop coastal way path from Harrington to Parton last week (Lowca Light Railway trackbed etc, plus that great bucket list favourite, Harrington No.10 methane vent). I've been travelling the coast route since I was a nipper in the late 1960s, and cannot recall ever seeing any...

    Draughtiest stations?

Definitely; endscreens cause a Venturi effect at the south end if the windi s in the prevailing direction

    Looe Valley line survival

The Whitehaven - Barrow section of the Cumbrian Coast was recommended for closure by Beeching; but I don't think closure proceedings were ever initiated; maybe Sellafield was the main factor in that?

    Avanti WC advances

I notice that when looking for northbound advances (in this case EUS to CAR), that fares tend to go up Mon-Fri the further into September one looks, yet they are cheaper when I look only a day or two in advance from the present, and on some services (usually Tues to Thurs), no advances at all...

Reputedly sinister location on Waverley Route

It may be Stobs Camp; I have a Waverley Route DVD presented by Ron White in which he mentions that Peter Handford could never get his recording equipment to work there, apparently with no rational explanation

Are the 1030 and 1130 departures likely to be 9- or 11-car Pendolinos please? Thanks, Andrew

Concerned about bad weather shutting off West Coast Mainline in Cumbria

24 hours solid rain in Cumbria is par for the course. WCML should not be affected. Longer periods of rain can be problematic. At Carlisle, like Cockermouth, there is a confluence of rivers. The Eden rises near Aisgill, and the Caldew in the NE Fells. Both areas have a lot of peat bog; this acts...

Trivia: Last BR totems in situ?

Last one I saw was in April 1988 on the G&SWR; I cannot recall exactly, but think it was either at Stewarton or Dunlop.

    Rare 1st gen DMUs on S&C: 1980s

I remember 4-car class 108 dmus on the Carlisle-Leeds-York "ghost trains" in the mid-80s; they ran will little pubilicity, so few pax, and more stats for BR to use a part of its closure manifesto. Anyone know of anything else? I've seen photos of a class 114, and a friend at university recalled...
