Something in the Class 66 thread got me thinking the class 37 is still around partly because of it's nearly go-anywhere route availablity (5). However as these have got old they will no doubt need replacement. What could they be replaced with and when could this happen?
Whilst travelling into Euston today I noticed the 3rd Rail on the DC lines which got me thinking. With the general reluctance for 3rd Rail and the dual voltage nature of the 710s. Has anyone considered ripping out the 3rd Rail except for where the Bakerloo lines share tracks?
I imagine it would...
I wondered if there are examples on the UK network where platforms have been operationally shortened but not physically so (e.g., barriers partway down the physical length), only to be 'reactivated' to close to their original length as rolling stock has grown longer.
I was thinking about this...
In a similar vein to Gareth Dennis' excellent video on the Morpeth curve I have been thinking about places where either a much quicker alignment or capacity could be created by taking out pinch points.
I'm not thinking of something as 'grand' as HS2 acting as a bypass for the southern WCML but...
I spotted notices for platform extension work when going to buy a ticket for tomorrow morning.

So Eurotunnel is considered to be a reasonable success however it still requires you to drive all the way down to Folkestone, putting considerable traffic on the M20 and M25, I imagine generating considerable greenhouse emissions.
I imagine a reasonable proportion of HGV and some Car traffic...
Yesterday I made the trip from Newton-le-Willows to York with my toddler and buggy and treated myself to a first-class upgrade; partially as I know that's where the only wheelchair spaces (to keep the buggy up) are on the Nova 1 / Class 802 fleet and partially as I thought it was worth it for...
After spending the evening in Liverpool (work Christmas do) I have just stepped onto the 38 which unfortunately for me is an all shacks affair as far as Warrington Central (where I get off) but then unusually it runs non-stop to Manchester Piccadilly which got me thinking is this the only train...
Hi Everyone, this morning I was just pondering whether the re-opening of the Warrington and Stockport Railway would be feasible. It looks like most of the alignment apart from George Richards way near Stockport hasn't be built on, and I think you might be able to viaduct that or realign part of...
Hi Everyone
I am shortly going to move up-to Warrington, where obviously you have two different stations on lines that intersect but don't connect (Central and Bank Quay). I appreciate the reason for this is historical (two competing railway companies) however it occurred why now we don't...
More of a passing thought than anything else is there any reason why the class 373s couldn't be used for HS2 Classic Compatible Stock (assuming the units were displaced from Eurostar/SNCF service). If so then surely that would reduce needing another fleet of non-standard potentially expensive UK...
Hi Everyone
Today I was thinking about something that was mentioned in another thread about building a chord from Royston towards Stansted Airport, which got me thinking how feasible would it be to build a Cross London Airport train network.
My proposed routes would be these:
Gatwick-Luton (as...
Hi everyone, I tried to do a search but nothing came up. Does anyone know why Basingstoke's platforms are numbered 'the wrong way' eg with down slow being 1 and up slow being 4?
