Something in the Class 66 thread got me thinking the class 37 is still around partly because of it's nearly go-anywhere route availablity (5). However as these have got old they will no doubt need replacement. What could they be replaced with and when could this happen?

I'd point out that the new GBRf class 99 locos only weigh 113 tonnes (according to the Beacon Rail data for them), which is an axle load of 18.8 tonnes so are in the RA5 category, based on the RA classifications on Wikipedia. But the actual RA calculations are more complicated than just the nominal axle load.

That's the niche 93's are meant to fill , ROG ordered them as a 37 replacement but for some reason have decided to keep the 37's alongside the 93's so the 93's have no work.

ROG had previously stated that they will not be dispensing with the Class 37s that they currently lease from Europhoenix. Presumably on the grounds that they were hoping to lease all 10 Class 93s to a FOC.
