I wondered if there are examples on the UK network where platforms have been operationally shortened but not physically so (e.g., barriers partway down the physical length), only to be 'reactivated' to close to their original length as rolling stock has grown longer.
I was thinking about this today in the context of Patricroft and Eccles, both of which, according to data I found, have operational platform lengths of 124m but longer physical lengths currently in a state of comparative disrepair. Both of them look to have had some extension work already but still fall short of what I suspect would be the longest operational consist using them of 2x Class 323s or 331/0s which would come to a shade under 150m. A glance at the satellite view on Google Maps would suggest sufficient physical length so why not reactivate it?
EDIT: You can even see the unused platform length at Eccles and Patricroft on streetview.
