British Railways ran this club in the early 1980's and every month, published a printed newsletter and a schedule of special excursion trains, to its registered members. Every weekend saw such trains running and most areas in the Greater Manchester area were served by these trains. Some of the...
Would re-opening this route that bypasses Wigan to the east be useful to allow non-stop running between Warrington and Preston on the WCML?
It would allow extra paths to be created in that section and allow for more express train running.
This has featured on some recent threads as part of a projected route to Greenfield then on to Leeds. It was famous for its 1 in 27 incline and in the late 1950's, I travelled on one of the few early morning trains from Manchester which still went that way...the majority going via Hollinwood...
I have just come across a copy of an ABC Manchester Railway Guide, price 2 shillings and 6 pence, dated 1st May to 17th June 1962 that I must have used whilst at university. There is a full page advertisment headed "Refreshment Cars" and the prices are as follows:-

Central Park was supposed to be open by Spring 2011, from the original information given in the press release, but matters seem somewhat delayed.
Can someone on the forum post the up to date position on this matter.

I have seen comments being made that direct services to Windermere were being withdrawn in the new timetable in order to improve the routes to Barrow in Furness and to Glasgow/Edinburgh.
An elderly neighbour and her friend (who lives in Heald Green) wanted to make a day return journey...
This company based on Smithy Bridge Road in Littleborough runs services in the Rochdale area and also school service routes. It is undestood that they were suffering from fuel overhead costs. It is reported that they have ceased trading last weekend, after a good number of years as an operator...

I believe the Fat Controller has called a meeting of all the engines later today at Sodor to discuss the implications there. Bob Crow will issue a statement after the meeting.

In the response of TfGM to the Select Committee, they urged the Government to make Manchester Airport a High Speed Rail stop, in addition to the city centre stop, which would give a journey time of 80 minutes to London. The stop at Manchester Airport would give greater commercial credability to...
Is there a COMPLETE through return ticket available, valid for a two week period in August, that will include the ferry costs and rail travel here and in the Isle of Wight.
This viaduct, originally only two tracks wide, led from the Miles Platting area to the Manchester and Leeds railway station at Oldham Road. Does anyone know when this viaduct was widened to four track in width and also it appears to have a much widened area adjoining it at the top end of New...
There have been discussions into re-opening the first two tunnels that were built as part of the scheme to give better trans-Pennine access between Manchester and Leeds and to allow express trains to pass slower services.
How long would this process take considering the examination of the...
This is an interchange for Manchester Metrolink. buses and heavy rail which is what good transport interchanges should hope to achieve.
Plans for the next stage of the refurbishment of this interchange have now been submitted to Trafford Council.
Was there a direct rail service from Manchester to either of these two areas ran in the 1960/1970 period as a link to passenger ferry services from that area to European ports? I know that Felixstowe is a very large container port these days.
An elderly lady neighbour of my sister-in-law would like to visit her sister in Lincoln and would like a journey that would not require much in the way of changes. She is quite an active person who likes walking with the local ramblers, so there is no problem with accessability. She lives only...
