I have just received notification that out-of-hours work will be carried out soon on this line. Has anyone any further news?

EDIT : I have just received further notification that along the line from Trafford Bar to St. Werburgh's Road, there will be such workings from Friday, 10th June to Friday, 24th June ... the work period being from 1800 through to 0500.

Nice day and nice to meet you martin. The guy at the crossing said it was taking ten minutes to get from one end to the other including using the crossovers - so it means nothing really as they sometimes missed out stops and other times spent long dwell times while they sussed out the craic!

But he did say it would be a 6 minute service starting 21st June . . .

but does he know . . . ?

All I can say is thank you for taking the trouble that you have obviously gone to in submitting all these views. They certainly show much progress on the first stage of the extension works. Even my wife, who does not normally see the forum, said that the size and clarity shown was excellant.

We were hoping to look at the works in the area of this line today, but ended up making a visit in Westhoughton instead.

With regard to the comments on out-of-hours working on my first thread on this line, the same will also be affecting the main Altrincham to Manchester route between Old Trafford and Trafford Bar stations, over the same time period of 10th June to 24th June from 1800 to 0500 each day.

Once the signalling has been completley converted all trams will operate on all routes but at the moment the Bury line beyond Victoria and the Altrincham line past Cornbrook havent switched over yet. Word from a driver today is they have been told 27th June as start date for services from St Werburghs to Victoria which chimes with the engineers on the ground saying they will be finished by the 21st June.

If the trams from St.Werburgh's Road in Chorlton will be terminating at Manchester Victoria, will they make use of the sidings on the other side of the bridge at Cheetham Hill Road?

I imagine so. During the closure of the Bury line a couple of years ago for the track upgrades, all trams terminated at Victoria and used the headshunt and crossover every time.

There is no crossover between Victoria and Shudehill either is there? So they'd have to use the headshunt, or go back through the city centre the wrong way...

No official date still, drivers were told 27th last week but there are reports that the work that was to be carried out in a weekend blockade this weekend was cancelled at the last minute which may delay opening depending on what it was.

Schedule of services starting 05.58 from Victoria to St Werburghs Road Monday 27th June is pinned on the drivers duty roster board at Queens Road Depot. Upto 5 more M5000 to be retrofitted with ATS signalling so they can operate interim service which explains 3014 being seen in service mentioned elsewhere.

Hi

Metrolink Update

It is proposed to introduce the new service on the South Manchester line,
initially with a 12 minute frequency. This will be integrated with the fixed
block signalling solution at the South Manchester junction with the
Altrincham line, to facilitate the interface with the existing signalling
system.

A 6 minute frequency will commence on the introduction of TMS as far as
Stretford and with the build-up of patronage on the south Manchester
line. This is currently scheduled for late November 2011.

Further systems integration and testing work is planned for the weekend
of the 25th/26th June. The successful outcome of this work will enable the
extension to be brought into passenger service by the end of June.

Engineering Work - 25 & 26 June 2011

On Saturday 25 June and Sunday 26 June There will be no trams running on the Altrincham line. Trams will run from Bury to Piccadilly, and Eccles to Piccadilly only. There will be no through services to Altrincham.

Looks like the only remaining immediate work to be done is to link up and test signalling of the junction at Trafford Bar connecting the old and new lines. There is a possession this weekend presumably to do this, then it's all systems go. Hopefully.

The smart money on Skyscrapercity is that the line won't open until the following Monday, at the earliest.

Hi

I saw this on the Skyscrapercity and not good news for Altrincham line as the be more Engineering Work on that line.

Metrolink's new service to south Manchester will not start for at least another week, Transport for Greater Manchester has said.

A key part of last weekend's work to prepare the line for passenger service this week could not be completed.

Engineers and technicians from Thales, the contractor delivering a new tram management system, will now need to re-schedule this part of the testing and commissioning for the coming weekend (2-3 July). Philip Purdy, Transport for Greater Manchester's Metrolink Director, said: "I am sorry that we're going to have to disappoint people this week but we have to make sure we have done all the testing and commissioning before we welcome passengers aboard."

All the new lines will be controlled by a new state-of-the-art tram management system. This allows more trams to run more reliably on the network, making it much easier for drivers and controllers to manage and respond to different scenarios.

The benefit to passengers will be more consistency in the arrival and departure of services, particularly at busy times.

The control of the existing system also needs to be upgraded so it can match these capabilities and passenger benefits.

Philip said: "The new system has to 'talk' to the existing system. The problem is that the new system is as advanced as the current system is old, so it's a bit like connecting your modern PC to a Commodore 64 and making them work together at this higher level.

"We were able to do some preparation and commissioning this weekend but the available time didn't allow us to complete the integration testing of an upgrade.

"Frustratingly for us and our customers this upgrade then caused a fault on the existing system which meant we had disruption this morning. We have done many similar upgrades in the past without any problems."

Susan Wildman, Transport for Greater Manchester's Director of Communications and Customer Services, added: "We have said all along that this is a very technical and complicated operation and that we can only start passenger services when it's completed.

"We are almost there but it will be at least into next week now before we know how soon the new line will be open for business.

"I'm sorry we couldn't make as much progress this weekend as we'd planned and I apologise in advance to our Altrincham line passengers for another weekend of disruption from Saturday (2 July). We'll be putting on replacement buses of course."

The new south Manchester line, with stops at St Werburgh's Road, Chorlton and Firswood, will give passengers a 15-minute link from Chorlton to St Peter's Square.

Metrolink's £1.4 billion expansion and improvement programme is the largest single investment in public transport outside London.

It will deliver the largest tram network in the country, one three times the size it is now with a line beyond Oldham to Rochdale, one to Ashton-under-Lyne, and to East Didsbury and Manchester Airport, with a second line across Manchester city centre.

Not been exactly the best public image for Metrolink over the last few weeks, with TfGM having to field "lost expectations" due to technical matters. The travelling public just want the service that they were promised...technical problems are not part of their mind-set. I know that there are those of us on the forum are fully understanding of these problems, but to the average traveller, they just see a tram...or a bus...or a train, as something to get them from "A" to "B".
