Metrolink’s new Chorlton line opens for business
Passengers will be able to travel on Metrolink’s new Chorlton line from Thursday 7 July.

Services will initially run every 12 minutes from service start to service end, Monday to Saturday. The Sunday 12-minute service runs between 9am and 5.30pm, with a 15-minute service from 6.58-9am and 5.30-10.52pm.

The journey time from St Werburgh’s Road to St Peter’s Square is approximately 15 minutes.

To find your fare, user our ticket selector.

Tram times are: 5.58am-11.52pm (Mon-Thurs); 5.58am-00.52am (Fri & Sat); 6.58am-10.52pm on Sundays.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be able to announce the start of services on the Chorlton line.

“It is both an historic occasion and a sign of the exciting future in store for the network, as we continue our £1.4 billion expansion – the single biggest investment in public transport outside of London.

“Residents and businesses have been eagerly awaiting this news and I would like to thank them for their patience, understanding and continued support while we completed the essential testing and commissioning.

“I would also pass on my thanks and appreciation to all of our existing Metrolink passengers. Investment on this scale is bound to cause some disruption somewhere and I want to thank them for their patience too.”

The new line forms part of a £1.4 billion investment in Metrolink, which will provide new lines and new trams for a network that will be three times the size it is now.

Further lines are being delivered through Oldham and on to Rochdale, to Ashton-under-Lyne via Droylsden, from the Chorlton line to East Didsbury, and to Manchester Airport via Wythenshawe. A second line across the city centre is also being developed.

Well you would of thought some genius would of came up with the idea the 2 signaling systems aren't compatible

Signallings compatible (probably using some sort of signalling interpreter to put it in a form the old control centre understands), problem is at the moment their feeding a much greater amount of data from the new signals which features many more balises and GPS into a computer control system built 20 years ago for a network a quarter the size!

I dont know when the new control centre goes live and the systems switched over.

It was supposed to open “Spring 2011”, whilst I’m the first to admit that it has been a complex project, things can go wrong, delays happen, etc, that’s life. But I do feel that Metrolink/TfGMs lack of communication over the last few months has left a lot to be desired.

They missed their "Spring 2011" deadline by two weeks!! Bearing in mind this line has been on the drawing board for 20years or so, I've think that's pretty good.

But to be honest they've worked hard at getting this built at all. Twice they've had the money taken away and still managed to get the thing built.

The problem were not TfGM doing but Thales. As they couldn't give a date to TfGM that they believed (especially after the MediaCityUK issues) they simple went into monitoring the situation and gave updates when they believed it was going to happen.

If you look at the DLR extention to Stratford International thats still not opened nearly a year after it was originally said to be and TfL have been slient on the issue. Even after they plastered every station with opening in 2011 posters!

If you have to compare the problems on the South Manchester line against this rather dramatic information, then we are fortunate indeed to have the new line running so quickly.

I personally think the communication and public information has been pretty good!

Oh noes...

The new Metrolink line to Chorlton was closed this morning - just 24 hours after it first opened to passengers.

Trams stopped running on the south Manchester line at 8.40 am and were out of action for over two hours before services resumed around 11am.

An attempted cable theft overnight halted trams, forcing bosses to temporarily suspend services on the second day of operations

I am now thinking a few years ahead when such occurances may occur. Just wait until they run the trams through a certain area before Manchester Airport Interchange is reached.

In Chorlton they only nick the cables. When it reaches Wythenshawe I forsee trams going missing :(

After all these delays to Metrolink extensions, I knew something had to go wrong with just hours of opening.

Well, Rich. Are you still looking forward to your autumn posting in the area near to where an airport exists (very carefully worded statement) or have you decided it might be better to go for the other posts in D.R. Congo, Afghanistan or the Ivory Coast, where life will seem much less exciting:D:D

No, in the airport district, they'll steal the cables, plant, tools, track and groundworks...

Is the reason why EGCC has such a big fence, to stop the wheels being nicked off the aircraft on stands 216 - 219
