GTR Class 377/387 cascade updates 2026

I should also add that there are differences in the interior, namely that the Class 377 has good old fashioned comfortable seats and the Class 387s have ironing boards. Nearly all of the seating throughout the train is 2+2 as well, rather than the mix of 2+2 and 2+3 present on most Class 377s.

In general, the inability to operate Class 377s and Class 387s together I would say is it a bit of bummer. However, if they are predominately allocated to either the West or East Coastway generally in the long term, its not much of an issue, given the trains usually operate as single and uncoupled 4-car units, and I suppose if they ever needed to extend them to 5-cars should demand ever increase (which I highly doubt given fares will probably end up skyrocketing at this rate after this so called "trial" on LNER, which there is another thread all about), then they could do that with some units which are semi-permanently assigned to Southern. Although most platforms can handle coupled 8-car units, in most cases its of little importance to regional services in most cases.

I suppose one of the future refreshes they could do with those units will probably be eventually to repaint them into Southern colours, so they more closely match the Class 377s which they are partially displacing, presumably to allow a few to head off to Southeastern, whilst still boosting capacity (presumably) on London suburban routes, given Class 377/3s could be soon be made largely redundant except on Bognor Shuttle and Seaford services (where you can't really justify 4-car trains to the same extent as other routes.
Unlikely they'll get a full repaint with GBR on the Horizon. With Gat Ex 387s running around on the coast.. and on Bognor/Eastbourne to London Bridge peak services, it's a bit of a mess.

I believe most 387s will run services on the coast. What they replace and where those units go is up for debate (apart from the 13 going to SouthEastern).

Personally... I like to see the return of peak Cat and Tatt to Vic services.. and more longer metro trains on Saturdays.

387129 even had Southern route maps displayed above the doors, although I will confess into not looking at them in detail to see if they still include Guildford & the Sutton loop services Southern ran Pre Covid.

WiFI was still "Great Northern" though

Looks like the GWR 387’s are being swapped with another three 387’s as the following moves are in for tomorrow:
A few pictures have emerged of 387172 now wearing a GN logo so it would strongly indicate they’re being swapped, for now anyway.

Apparently they have an SDO software issue and will be going back to GN until the new software comes.

Hiya, sorry just to confirm who is “we” and told by who? :)
Expect them to be used on Mid Kent and Tunbridge Wells services as they are intnded to be Mainline stock. The CHX to Gillingham service is a Metro service.

I assume by "Mid Kent" you're referring to the Maidstone East Line and not the Hayes line, the latter being called the "Mid Kent line" (even though it's a complete misnomer).

Do we know if the units that Southeastern will inherit have had power socket? Fitment done? The existing 377 that Southeastern have or have been using sporadically. Do not have these yet unless they've done them recently. And whilst it's very much a first world problem, it's also a little bit naughty of them to shout on their website that all mainline units now have at seat power

I suspect that means that all units should get plug sockets fitted if they are not already fitted, given that has happened with pretty much all of the Southern Class 377s, other than some of the /3 subclass which seems like that was last in the queue to be done. Either way, its a pretty light refurbishment anyway, so not much to really be done.

Also, is there any chance they might have the seat covers changed, because it seems they all have Southern seat covers as the units were originally meant for Southern, before basically immediately moving to First Capital Connect, which then became Thameslink before moving to Southeastern. Given if the Seat covers are worn out and need to be changed, they might as well fit something else to them other than that of the neighbouring operator.

Are the 377/1's moving going into SE stock and their mtce regime or still having to be cycled back to the Southern like the /5's.

While I obviously can't confirm this beyond all doubts, I suspect that will be the case, given Selhurst (and probably other Southern depots) obviously have all of the equipment designed specifically for Class 377s, although I suspect some of the lighter maintenance could easily be done at SE's depots, alongside the Class 375s. That is unless Southeastern or any future operator (of either trains and/or infrastructure) invests in improving facilities at the Southeastern depots to allow Class 377s to be fully maintained there, saving them having to constantly cross over to Southern's network for maintenance. Maybe in the very long term, they could even look at converting the Southeastern Class 377s into Class 375s, in turn allowing those fleets to operate together more easily and be maintained at the same place.

Is there a material technical difference between a 375 and 377 as i believe its the same traction equipment but not sure about software build.

Yep that’s correct, saw both 123 and 126 outside Selhurst Depot yesterday. They’re now at Lovers Walk I believe

I think there are some very slight differences between them, at least enough to prevent them from working together, and requiring SE Class 377s to have to go to Selhurst. If they were completely identical, then they would have been reclassified to 377s when their couplers were changed from Tightlocks to Dellners.

I believe 377s also don't have clearance to go to Dover via Shakespeare Tunnel, even though the same body profile and end-door provision means they must be okay in terms of evacuation capability (or if they now can there was a time they couldn't).

Might just be one of those paperwork things where the clearance was for 375s as at the time the 377s were also classified as 375s. No one has bothered to update the paperwork to reflect the changes in classification because there has been no need.

377s have DOO cameras fitted whereas 375s do not
Which makes sense, considering they’re majority used for Southern Metro services for which DOO is sensible, rather than 375s which predominantly work the mainline routes of SE.

Do the existing 377/5s at SE a) also have DOO cameras and b) utilise them when in operation with SE in DOO areas? (I know they don't in guard-operated areas like the Maidstone East line beyond Otford).

Does anyone know if 377121 and 122 are in service today?
377121 & 122 are in passenger service for the first time today, working together on services between Victoria and Ramsgate/Dover Priory via Chatham.
They are still in Southern green livery, but have Southeastern branding down the sides.

I've been told that the 377/7s are the only units left on Southern that is having the Aurora update (power sockets etc.), so that indicates the /1, /2, /3, /4 & /6 units have been done.
Once completed, then the SE 377/5s will be updated.

Thank you for this information. What a shame they didn’t escape before Southern ruined the PIS ;)

Oh? Will the work be identical for SE as what Southern ordered? Will we lose the nice PIS from these too?

Does the 377 DOO Camera make them wider and thus a problem for the Shakespeare Tunnels?

remember almost all of SN is now DOO not just metro.

I believe 387172-387174, 387301-306 and the 379s will be aurora upgraded too. I heard it from a southern worker on a fb group so not sure how true it is but it would make sense to aurora upgrade all electrostars that are with GTR.

I do hope one day they find a way to upgrade the software on the 379s to allow them to couple with the remaining 387s at GN.

It might be easier to "upgrade" the software on the 9 or so 387s that might want to work with 379s - genuine question ?.
It was so much easier back in the 1960s- 1990s.
