Out and about in Yorkshire;

05/07/86. My notes say 'DMU at Leeds', which is succinct - if not especially helpful!

I have 2 decent shots at London termini left;

27/07/85. A pair of 4TC units side by side at Waterloo. These were being employed on the Weymouth workings that day.

29/12/86. This train has appeared on at least two images posted previously, but this is the best I think, especially considering the changes at this location since. 45120 heads the 16.35 Nottingham service, at St. Pancras before departure.

And this is the last batch, the barrel is officially empty after this.

These all relate to the Midlands area, my home turf and are all relatively early photos. I think my focus was on escaping the area for the North or the South once into 1986/7, that certain seems to be the pattern with the shots I have. Similar to my other groups of photos, it's a fairly mixed batch style wise, but I may have held one or two goodies till last...

18/08/85. 31415 has the 12.50 Birmingham - Norwich well under way again after the stop at Leicester. Seen here passing Knighton South Junction.

Jan 86. Yes, it is back to that cold misty day at Ratcliffe again. Here is 25202, this time on the approach to the power station, with a long train of ZHV wagons.

06/05/85. Power Car 43180 in the then still noteworthily fresh Executive Livery, passes Litchurch Lane with the 11.10 Cardiff - Newcastle.

28/05/85. An early 'progressive' dabble. DMU 53047, with the 20.25 Boston service, stands at platform 1 at Nottingham Station.

That's not 43180. It has a window at the rear of the van; 43153 and above were built without this. Second it is the first version of the Excecutive livery with the yellow extended back over the cooler group area: only five power cars ran with this variant (43125/126/129/130/151). As it also carries 253030, I suspect a mis-read of 43130?

12/05/85. A real personal favourite to finish. A bit of human interest, decent framing and great light modelling catching the front of the 47. 47625 pulls into Loughborough Station on the 16.00 Derby - St. Pancras.

Those two prospective passengers could well be wearing clothes from the 1950s which adds to the atmosphere.

I think the vinyl roofed hatchback may be a Ford Fiesta. My initial thought was that it was a Capri, but there's a bit of the side showing and that changed.my mind.

Nice shot of the APT, too (not wishing to digress too far from the main subject!) :)
I think maybe a Morris Marina Coupe?

Ah love this, brings back memories of living in the area during the 80s, and the old Leeds Station. What’s intrigued me about this is the Metrotrain posters.

  • The Hallam line looks like a loop on the route diagram but I don’t remember it being a loop. Any thoughts?
  • What the heck is the 3 rivers line? Don’t remember hearing that mentioned. Again, anybody have any idea/links to timetables?
Thanks for sharing, I’d love to see anymore from Leeds especially if you have any. I hope you had a lot of enjoyment searching through all of these and uploading them, it looks like plenty of people have enjoyed viewing them.

The "Three Rivers Line" was Leeds to Doncaster via Wakefield Westgate (so Aire to Don passing over the Calder).

I think that the "Hallam Line" also includes Leeds to Sheffield via Wakefield Westgate (the large blob on the top line) as well as Leeds to Sheffield via Wakefield Kirkgate (which was not a large blob) and Barnsley; the appearance of being a loop is just that - an appearance.

The DMU at Leeds platform 2 is so ordinary that it was rarely photographed. It was one of the regular platforms for trains coming in from Ilkley and therefore for me arriving at (or departing from) Leeds for many years though.

As it turns out, I have continued to return to my scanned photos and have enjoyed further delving into the capabilities of Photoshop. So, in what is not in the slightest a shameless attempt to bump this thread back up the charts, here is a selection of ones I missed the first time around, alternative takes and an excuse to roll in more nostalgia from my youth.

No specific grouping this time, just in chronological order.

09/03/85. 08677 is captured at Leicester next to the Royal Mail depot. 20 secs @ f5.6, XP-1.

17/03/85. Engineering work on this Sunday saw all MML trains diverted via Peterborough. Late season overnight snow here at Oakham with a London bound HST.
