21/04/85. HST 'Shildon, County Durham' heads north out of Leicester past Bell Lane Sidings, in charge of the 16.00 St P - Sheffield.

02/05/85. 25297 at the fuel pumps on Leicester Depot. A couple of years earlier, this was my last 25 needed for sight and was proving frustratingly elusive until I finally caught up with it at Cardiff Canton. As is the way, it then seemed to follow me around thereafter!

05/05/85. Bell Lane again and a somewhat cluttered attempt at including anything of interest. HST is on the 10.30 Derby - St. P.

16/06/85. I don't have many shots of Whistlers, there were not many left in '85 and IIRC those that were were pulled into Departmental use for the Crewe re-modelling not long thereafter. This is a shot of 40063 snatched from a passing train at Bescot. Out of interest, this is a low number for a centre headcode example to wear, what was the reason for that?

10/08/85. I don't think this one has been posted before, but this view from Fareham Station overbridge certainly has. 33046 has command of the 12.05 Cardiff - Portsmouth.

12/08/85. I'm a bit of a '73 fan boy, so this one had to make the cut. 73108 has a load of mk1's forming the 09.40 Waterloo - Weymouth 'Channel Islands Boat Train', seen here at Basingstoke.

14/08/85. 33201 after arrival at Portsmouth Harbour on the 16.15 service from Cardiff. The 'Slim Jim' had replaced a recalcitrant 33/0 at Sailsbury.

15/09/85. Any chance to capture a transition period from old to new is always particularly rich. By '85 the change over on the MML was nearly complete and the Peaks limited to just a few services each day. Here, 45146 makes the stop at Leicester in charge of the 17.05 St. P - Nottingham - largely a peak time relief service running behind the 17.00 HST.

Jan '86. Another from my Ratcliffe batch. I'll admit to a bit of hedge pruning in Photoshop on this one! The 47 is un-recorded.

May '86. 45118 rumbles through the deep cutting on the southern approach to Leicester on a north bound mail.

18/10/86. A 'progressive' effort that even I didn't dare to post first time around. An aperture of f16 needed to get the depth of field and I am not sure how I managed to hold the camera steady for the 65 second exposure time. Worth it, you decide...!

47287 is glimpsed at BNS.

04/11/86. Probably, even to this day, you will find my footprints embedded in this bridge at Fareham. I would have had the 33 for haulage from Southampton, jumped off and crossed to the other platform - pointing my camera on the way - for a working back, a few minutes later. Bashing at it's most efficient!

33020 on the 08.00 Cardiff - Portsmouth, this time.

17/03/85. Engineering work on this Sunday saw all MML trains diverted via Peterborough. Late season overnight snow here at Oakham with a London bound HST.

A really evocative "time-capsule" of a composition, R. I only managed to capture one HST Driving Motor in original livery. Cracking stuff.
Thanks for "shamelessly bumping" this thread: much to enjoy in it. :)

Post #1485, 40063, you posed why a "disc headcode" series of loco had centre boxes.
Haymarket-allocated D260 to D266 all were modified, from discs to centre box.
Outer corners of their 'boxes are square-cornered - whereas the 'true" centre headcode series D345-398 all had radiussed outer corners.

The name of that class 43 was 'Shildon, County Durham'....named after the town where the historic Stockton & Darlington Railway began in 1825 and later the site of an important wagon building and repair works, which is now an outstation of the National Railway Museum at York.

IIRC, those locos were modified in 1965-66 at St Rollox works in Glasgow.

Great photos though and a priceless record of past times!

Excellent, I knew it wouldn't be long before someone would have the answer to the Whistler question. I had to zoom in and check that I had got the correct number in my notes, as it didn't seem right to me.

Another historical note taking error!- I will go back and correct. Glad you enjoyed the newly posted photos. I think that's definitely it now, although I said that last time...*

*I have been frantically searching around for my colour negatives which actually pre date the B&W. i know I have a great shot of the 15 or so Deltics lined up at the back of Doncaster Works after they were withdrawn. No luck finding yet though.

That’s a really interesting rationalised track arrangement. Which line is it that goes straight on at that point?

At Fareham the first line built was a line from Bishopstoke, now called Eastleigh, that ran pretty well straight to Gosport, where Portsmouth would be served by crossing the Harbour. It is reputed that when it was being built the people of Portsmouth were in uproar because the company building it was the London & Southampton and they did not want to be served by a company with their hated rival’s name in the title. So the London & Southampton became the London & South Western. The story may even be true.

The line swinging off to the left is the slightly later line than ran to Cosham. It later connected up with the London, Brighton & South Coast and the joint lines in the Portsmouth area.

The old Gosport branch, latterly MoD Bedenham. Here are a few shots from a fellow local photographer.
It's now completely overgrown.

Very interesting. I’ve just got a couple of Bakers atlases out to have a look. Thanks for the information.
