Seriously though, its quite easy to tell as there is quite a jolt when the train actually stops.

Which there was yesterday, we were walking to the window uphill.

just arrived in Manchester, after very enjoyable day out on the 07:24 Man Picc to Newquay & 15:22 return back, all 720 miles of the passenger side of the diagram...

I am very happy that the Valenta was on the FC end, as I enjoyed the great thrash throughout the day...

Did anyone from here bash the Manchester-Newquay, or return at all today- If so, i probably saw you..

Are you actually allowed to do that though? I've always wondered myself that if you're on a STD ticket, can you stand in the vistible between FC or FC and the engine.

Well I was standing in FC when the TM checked my standard class tickets and didn't I couldn't. However I don't think it is officially allowed.

Fair enough! I've heard of the same storys on when it was MML. I've just never wanted to try it to be honest.

I think they'd be a little irritated if you hadn't asked. If you ask the guard, they often say it's fine as long as you don't make much noise. I've done it before when the train has been totally wedged in standard too.

Is that why the station dispatcher had to walk along the four foot, through to the driver of the HST, to tell him to go at Totnes, and warn him that you got on?

I was stood in the very front vestibule at Totnes, and never heard the TM give the driver two, even though I did hear the beeps on the driver-guard at every other point.... :-?

Did you see the huge line-side fire very soon after leaving Bristol Temple Meads, Matt?

The driver ex Bristol was such a great, friendly chap... I thanked him when we got into Birmingham, and he was ever so friendly. :grin:

I walked around New Street square, before going to Subway, and returning to the HST, in the 20 minutes we were there... A W&S service with one EWS 67, and one W&S 67 apprarently came through whilst i went for a little wonder..

I was very surprised to see no ticket checks at either the main barrier, or the side north exit away from platforms 1-6..

You on about the fire that looked like it was at a scrap yard? The Wrexham Service passed me as I was changing platforms to get my train back to Coventry

Weren't near the lineside! We saw it but if it had been near the line I'm fairly convinced they'd have stopped M28.

Did M28 from Bristol Temple Meads to Bristol Parkway (purely because we were after some Duffage, otherwise would have gone to Cheltenham), 43108 was quite noisy and could be heard from the front end of Standard Class.

Probably saw you, voyagerdude220, when lots of young neds got their phots at BRI. Since two neds were at the front windows we cba to try it. I did enjoy 43108 though, glad to have got it in whilst it was a Valenta.

you probably did see me, but I didn't have my camera to hand by the time we stopped at Temple Meads on the return leg, as the battery died south of Newton Abbot...

I was a bit annoyed at the 2 neds taking the front windows from Temple Meads, but they left at Cheltenham, so it wasn't too bad.

I was very impressed with the comfort of the Mallard refurbishment, even though I did have a trip in FC on a 91 MK4 set Motherwell-Haymarket in April, which I didn't really like... :-?

Finally! Someone else agrees with me re: MK4 Mallards! :grin:

I like the HST Mallards, but not the MK4 Mallards.

I am on a HST Cross Country to Penzance NOW(lucky I brought my laptop).Unfortunately we are a bit delayed because (brace yourselves) there was a sheep on the line :???:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I must say they are quite nice + it has got an enough room to fit all my luggage in!

I was very confused by the fact I really liked the HST's mallardised state, yet I remember hating the refurbish job on the MK4....

When I walked through two of the SC coaches on the HST, in order to ID a Voyager which was adjacent to us at Plymouth, It looked rather comfortable in SC.

43108 was fantastic going up the Lickey, but like I said before, we really did have a fabulous driver from Bristol Temple Meads

It's strange that people don't like the mk4 refurbishment but like the mk3, I often forget that I'm even on a HST in a mk3 Mallard as they're pretty much identical to the mk4s! How many refurbished sets are there now? Must be a few as I had a refurb set there and back to King's Cross on Saturday and saw another one at King's Cross whilst waiting for mine. Think XC must have stolen the Valentas - double MTU there and back for me .

A group of us are doing the ENTIRE run from Penzance to Dundee this Friday. It would be great to meet various people along the way. It's something I've always wanted to do on a Valenta, and I thought I'd missed my chance.

Voyagerdude - stop moaning about windows! Did you ask if you could share? I've just been on a tour in Ireland, and anyone who wanted to share the front window just asked in a friendly way to share and everyone was happy! If you don't ask you don't get!

The hired sets only run on Saturdays. The PGN diagram has an overnight ECS from Neville Hill to Bristol. Tomorrows set should be 43104 and 43166
