Similar to advice below except I would aim stockport maybe. Best bet is for you to gon national rail find your train and look at your options. But crewe manchester (stockport) is definitely your best bet. Then you got EMT, TPE and some northern services to choose from.

Change at Stafford or Crewe for Manchester, then Sheffield. You might have more chance with XC from Stafford than with VT from Crewe.

Doesn't look like it. It appears East Coast are only planning to run a shuttle service between Peterborough and Kings Cross for the rest of the day. Presumably so any delays on this section of the route don't impact on the rest of the network.

Probably the 1530 KGX - PBO. EC have booked trains every 30 minutes from KGX to PBO until 2130.

Looking back at yesterday's posts, many were of the view that NR/TOCs were overreacting in announcing reduced services beforehand.
Looking at the extent of disruption today, BBC reporting 100 trees down on railways etc etc, I'd suggest they got it about right.

Could you imagine the outcry if NR embarked ona systematic program to remove all trees (including those outside of the railway boundary!) that could possibly fall on the railway? Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

They got it bang on, infact if they would have known i bet they would have shut it all till midday. Some lines got hit bad.

Interestingly GA have removed their "We hope to run a full service tomorrow" comment on their website. Still nothing running North of Shenfield or South of Norwich on the GEML.

Unfortunately not. Managed to drag the smaller trees between us. Several gangs where around doing the heavy work. Lots of medium branches & foliage stuck in the overheads.

I can only imagine how much the guys on the GEML have got to do then, the gusts were stronger near the Essex coast. I'll be surprised if the Harwich and Clacton branches (no pun intended) open on time in the morning.

Amazed it didn't have Bob Crow's statement in that, as it seems like it would be a perfect fit.
As for the MP saying about a gust of wind stopping trains. Did he not realise that a gust of wind doesn't stop a train - but a bloody great tree bringing down wires, and water flooding lines/tunnels, does?

Both franchises shocking today on their services in the Ely area
Both weren't interested in running a single train until late in the afternoon
GA ran empty coaching stock to Kings Lynn and Ely but no passenger services?? Two Middleton Towers freight trains got through between Ely and Middleton Towers but no FCC services
EMT were running an erratic service between Ely and Norwich while for CC it was just another ordinary day at the office between Ely and Cambridge, however no FCC or GA services, strange to say the least

Sorry, that was slightly harsh. But yeah. Going over track to see if there's a tree with empty coaching stock is much preferable to crashing into a tree with a train full of passengers because it's the first train of the day.
If the line is blocked further down to where you are in your own little world, CrossCountry and freight might be able to pass whereas there would be no point in FCC or GA running any if they can't get past obstructions further down and would end up just queueing up.

You can almost sense the disappointment in the journalists voice.
All I would say is thanks to everyone who has worked hard to restore services, and are continuing to do so, in whatever capacity. Some of us appreciate all the effort.

Fcc are refusing to run any services on the Sutton loop despite the tracks being clear.
The radio has reported that the real reason behind these mass cancellations is so that they can avoid late punctuality penalties.

It should be obvious to anyone that the railways made the right call today. I think the photo accompanying the news article says it all. SWT has been hit hard because of the heavily wooded areas it serves.
Unfortunately, rightly or wrongly, people are cynical of SWT seemingly not running at the drop of a hat after last winter's "snow timetable" debacle. An emergency timetable was introduced before any snow had fallen. The Chertsey line had no service, yet come the Sunday when it was chucking down with snow heavily, the line was open as it was used to an engineering works diversion. The following day, when it was mild and the snow was thawing, the snow timetable was back on, with no service on the Chertsey line - while Southern and SET ran normal services. Not SWT's finest hour and a lot of reputational damage was done, which is a pity as I remember the superb efforts (the pre-Alliance) SWT made in December 2010 during the heavy snow then.

Totally agree, i can't help thinking that the tocs decisions to suspend / reduce services have prevented something more serious from happening, yet the idiots in the BBC go looking for a news story, probably because one of their precious staff had their train cancelled & had a moan
That's what Bob Crow has said anyway.
Surely TOCs wouldn't get penalised when they can't run trains due to overhead lines coming down, or the track being blocked? It would all be attributed to Network Rail.
So, it would seem that to get the most money, you'd actually attempt to run every train and hope it all goes tits up.
