Reports on Twitter of a Chiltern service hit by a tree. Apparently the driver's fine, windscreen's got a couple of cracks, but it's continuing to at the very least somewhere where passengers can be sensibly detrained

Latest standing message from SWT control is there are currently 29 seperate locations affected on their network and nothing is expected to run until at least 1000 hours.

Live departure boards not working, checked EMT's twitter. The line between bedford and London is shut until 12pm due to trees on the line. Trees are on the overhead power lines at St Albans. No alternative route from Leicester or Derby via Euston due to obstructions near London Euston.

Indeed, although oddly the Live Train Times App is working fine

No power supply issues that I am aware of, but pretty much every area of the network is affected by fallen trees. We've had to stop for the 4th time now, but luckily we have p-way riding with us and clearing the line as we go.

Now this does sound like real time(ish) reporting - must be a great comfort having the PW gang with you on board. Hope they have good tools - train tool box contents help but "proper" equipment makes the difference.

There is a report on BBC that the tunnels are flooded at Potters Bar and overhead wire problems at New southgate. Trees on the Hertford loop.

Below some photos from Guildford station. Interestingly NRE list two trains as delayed, the 8.38 and 8.48, both FGW services. Someone at SWT has simply removed them so it's great to see that they are not just leaving the system on autopilot. They had in the past only put up those running as opposed to those running and those cancelled but it doesn't matter, as long as all those shown as running but are not running are not displayed. I think that policy needs to be extended to NRE.

There was a train on platform 8 at one point so that might have left to do some line checking. Out of interest when will they start to check the lines that are closed all day today? Will that be this afternoon.

Which line are you driving on?

Empty FGW trains heading towards Guildford having been sent from Reading and Redhill to clear the line. Difficult to tell whether delay is due to fallen trees or poor rail conditions - probably a bit of both.

Actually, it seems quite obvious that the one coming from Reading has encountered fallen trees given the delays incurred.

A Southeastern spokeswoman just announced on Radio Kent that they are running a half hourly service between Ashford & St Pancras. Also an hourly service (I think) between Ashford & Dover Priory and Ramsgate & Deal.

How are trees on the line in Kentish Town? It's almost all in deep cuttings. If I go for a bus am I going to see tree roots peeking over the top of the cutting?

Can I just ask if anyone has any idea when FCC will start again through the core? Kentish Town through to Blackfriars especially. I'm sorry to be that guy asking a stupid question about when my particular train will run, but despite the smugness of the London Underground staff I asked last night, my back up route is in chaos.

Reading over the post since last night, especially your 0719, I'm glad you're moving again.

They can't run through the core until the lines either side are open. St. Albans blocked, Kentish town and other north London stretches blocked. Until all those trees are clear and overheads repaired where needed the core will remain shut. They can't just run st pancras-blackfriars. Wouldn't be any point and the trains are all out side the core.

Trees can fall into cuttings from above-peoples back gardens, streets etc.

SWT are reporting that they've cleared 21 of the 33 trains blocking their lines, and that services are not expected to begin before 11:00 at the earliest. I'm attempting to get into Waterloo now, but may give it up as a lost cause - at this rate I won't get into work until after lunchtime.

Roads in Charlton leading up to the Blackwall Tunnel are moving very slowly, as you'd expect...

Fair enough. That's most or all of the day isn't it? I shall have to entrust myself to the tube. I'll wait for their delays to clear up then head in. Thanks.

Network Rail reporting over 100 trees on lines in the South East this morning and they ''expect to find more as they complete... safety checks this morning.''

XC services are currently the only services serving Cambridge, Ely and Peterborough this morning and commendably they have been running their full service, although with delays of up to 20 minutes and no service between Cambridge and Stansted Airport until 10:00. EMT Norwich services are now starting to run.

The Greater Anglia service suspension has been pushed back to 12:00.

THey are saying nothing until further notice basically because it sold expends how quickly the line can be cleared and trains can get out of depots etc.

They won't know how long until each blockage has been assessed and work started. NR staff need to get to each blockage obviously.

Thanks for sharing the photos. The top two are from around Farnham. Do you know where the bottom one was taken?

How long would it take to repair a signal that had a tree knock it over? Can't be a quick process.

I believe it is just north of Brighton, but I'm not 100%.

We don't get much wind in this particular 1st world country.

So we don't engineer things to handle strong winds.

One day of disruption in five years seems testament to the reasonableness of that decision.

How can we engineer trees? :p

Another photo on Twitter. Botley: https://twitter.com/TheCBear121/status/394743073173155840/photo/1

Real Train times are listing some trains as having run normally but that can't be if the trees are on the line. Does anyone know why the data feed that they receive would give information out like this. The 8.11 from Guildford to Waterloo is one example of a train where it appears to show that it ran ok.

Oh dear *Facepalm*

Do you REALLY want to be told why you cant run trains with trees on the line ? Just look at the pictures for the reasons why !!

On the Southern network, trees are down at Hassocks, Keymer Junction, Pulborough, Lancing, Bosham, Seaford, Balham (6 in this area) and the Redhill - Tonbridge line has a lot.

We'll be ok once I get my investment from Dragons Den for my "Where the trees are going to fall over" machine. They are random events, you cannot predict properly where these things will happen. It makes more sense to find and sort the majority of issues before you get trains stuck everywhere.

Public reaction still angering but thanks for the updates on here from the men on the ground!

Looks like the TOCs and Network Rail called it bang on.... but actually worse than expected. Can't believe 5 live had that report on...

Because the scorched earth policy of c;earing every tree within 100 or 200 ft of a railway line is not exactly popular with the public. Not only that but many of the trees won't have been on land owned by Network Rail so they can't clear them anyway.

Yes its annoying but better to be safe at home than stuck on a train stranded after it hits a tree.
