With the width of the GC gauge being 3.15m, that means that a train derailed to the left would impinge on the envelope of a train on the other track before it was (possibly) restrained by the back of the right-hand wheel contacting the left-hand rail.
For reference, the TSI requires 4.3m for 250km/h to 300km/h and 4.5m above 300km/h. That may not be relevant in this specific case, because it's likely the train derailed to the right before being pulled leftwards by the crossover, but there's possibly a more general point here.
