Its not just Facebook, comments under news articles are as bad. Unfortunately there a minority of people who will be bitter and unhappy in general. Don't get me wrong there are valid reasons to be anoyed about individual topics but I bet plenty of those people very regularly post negative stuff on social media. Manchester Evening News comments are so reliably negative that I read them for a laugh.

I would suggest you look at the BBC Look North post about it. Plenty of entirely negative comments, many are factually inaccurate too.

The Look North post has some of the standard moans like "I'll believe it when I see it", when they have just watched a video of the first unit built. Or my favourite one from there "But what about West Yorkshire?"....

I think some of the moaners have been sub-leased from the infamous Bradford Telegraph & Argus Formation Moaning Team, well known in the area for talking down every good news story. Their motto is "If they offered us a big bag of money, we'd complain about the colour of the bag.".

Another comment went on about how Look North should ask about how people from Dewsbury will no longer have a direct train to Scarborough during the summer holidays, as if the folk of dewsbury having to change at Leeds like the entire rest of West Yorkshire to get to Scarborough is some kind of massive issue that should be investigated as a matter of urgency.

I know, I had a chuckle at that too. But how are people from Dewsbury supposed to get to Scarborough? Well I am guessing the same way people from Batley, Bramley, Bradford or Burley-In-Wharfedale do, get a train to Leeds and change!!

As an aside, I can remember the bank holiday specials from Bradford Interchange to Scarborough when I was much (much) younger. One in particular stands out when it was formed of a total of 9 cars, being a mixture of 2 and 3 car 101s & 110s. A sight to behold chugging its way up the incline towards Laisterdyke! I demand they make an immediate return (with a call at Dewsbury obviously).

I think it also helps prove how much 'standard' (non-enthusiast) passengers actually notice or care about the rolling stock - one comment says that these trains are already in use and they're quite nice, someone else asks if East Coast will follow in getting new trains. Maybe Virgin's Azuma advertising isn't quite loud enough...

This is true, my wife a while ago commented on the 'new' trains that she had caught along the Aire valley. It threw me for a second until I realise she had been on a 321/322 not long after the 322s landed with Northen and freed some up to run more regularly along the Aire / Wharfe triangle. It should be interesting to see what passengers make of real new trains when the ordered stock enters service!!

There's a fair chance, with the classic interior and loco on the end, that people will think they're old. I know someone who genuinely thought the Class 180 being used by Northern was from the 1970s because of the similarity to the Mk3 (doors and droplights are something enthusiasts notice) and slightly faded interior.

I've seen the Look North Yorkshire feature on BBC iPlayer. Should be available until this evening unless it was also on the late Look North. My parents, who once lived in Leeds, were very surprised to see old Harry Gration still presenting.

It does, but most people pay little attention to that. The coaches themselves, OTOH, look very much like tarted up Mk2s or Mk3s with power doors, and the First Class colour scheme, particularly when a bit faded, looks very dated.

The class 180 does have a very high degree of streamlining, as does the cab end of the TPE Mk5 rakes. It is said that a modern appearance derives from the level of streamlining.

Didn't the Scarborough train only pick up a Dewsbury call when TPE went to 5tph on that line, with it previously being the Newcastle and Middlesbrough trains that called at Dewsbury?

That was indeed the case: Airport to Newcastle/Middlesbrough services called at Dewsbury with Piccadilly to Hull and Liverpool to Scarborough services having some extra calls in the peaks.

But since when have people allowed facts to get in the way of a good moan?

I wouldn't say it was near identical or even really that similar, to be honest.

Maybe the poster meant from inside. Externally, the driving trailer cab end looks more like an insect.

I meant the interior layout! I have pictures now to show - the only difference I can see is that the TPWS has been moved to accommodate a screen, and one dial that has been removed.

To be fair, most car dashboards are very similar in layout apart from stylistic points (which you have fewer of on a train), so I doubt it's that much of an issue.

It's good practice to have both cabs being as similar as possible. The 90s and mk3 DVTs had very similar layouts, I presume the 91 and MK4 DVT being of similar era will also be alike.

Photos taken at Velim today. Both locos were idling and there was some activity in the driving trailer, but no movement. 019 was in the same position last night, but today was being shunted into the position in the photos when I arrived, so maybe I missed it going around the test track before I arrived (1 hour later than planned, thanks to CD).
