i am more than happy with 3.4% and of course next to no strings exactly as it should be.

Some bills, like water increased by 37%, food increased a minimum of 25% / product, some even more and these muppets offer 3%. You guys are doomed slowly. At least some grades.

Unfortunately individual things like that carry little weight. It will just be based on the qualifying months RPI figure.

So the DFT are offering a pay rise lower than they’ve offered to any other sector?

3.4% ??

Problem is that with the average driver salary, the amount of tax and closer you get with each rise can be detrimental, especially with kids and potentially getting close to the boundary that sees child care allowance taken.

And yet the lower earning grades seem to be getting offered lower terms! Widening the pay gap

Understandable. And something for ASLEF to consider regarding just the drivers.

But the lower grades are being absolutely shafted once again.

I don’t work for GA, but I saw this posted on social media recently. Most are just completely awful salaries that the unions cannot just continue to neglect.

Problem with the likes of GA and SE is that they've sold majority of their T&Cs that would be used for bargaining, especially SE which did that around the Connex era and in one big lump.

Pay increases that have no strings attached are often the best they'd be able to get imo, unless a potential change to working comes that needs to be agreed then a Union could find a way to try and get something out of agreeing.

Difficult alas, also have tl remember most of those TOCs are seen now as Nursery Tocs, higher turnover to most due to yes the salaries and other T&Cs and thus not as much wealth of experience and grit, staff wise.

If I calculate that at a 35hr week, it is £74 more than the minimum wage (for 21+) a year.

What about GWR? Take it no offer has been accepted there?
Comms from TSSA yesterday:

……We have now had a response to say that the Company have now received a mandate to make a pay offer to us from the DFT and have therefore set up a further meeting on Thursday 28th August.………

Station staff are not prioritised by the unions and it would be possible to work around their absence in the event of a strike. Their bargaining position is limited, as are many other grades.

Hardly fair to suggest ASLEF neglect other grades. They exist only to represent drivers, and do a good job of it. The RMT do their best, but inevitably station staff have less bargaining power due to the nature of their roles.

Yes unless there was some grade harmonization like that of LU where some tube drivers and station staff are part of the same Union(RMT) and so collectively take action.

I’m not suggesting ASLEF neglect any grades?

I’m saying if the union, or the members, feel that the basic pay is becoming so high that is has knock on consequences, then they should push for other ways to improve the lives of drivers instead of the RPI increase. But every driver is in a different position in their own lives, so it’s hard to do.

For the lower grades, they need every % they can get.

Which has happened previously, such as reducing weekly hours for the same salary which works out at a higher hourly rate. Believe TfW did this a few years ago

You literally said “the unions cannot just continue to neglect”. There are only two! I don’t agree that ASLEF can be blamed for other grades poor pay - I take the point that you perhaps didn’t mean to suggest that.

I agree with your wider point. However lack of bargaining power can’t easily be overcome.

Nice one. Never have understood the strings squit. Just sign and agree. It always happened eventually.
So are suggesting we just accept any old offer regardless of what’s attached, even if it’s detrimental to the grade and other grades

TSSA = Transport & Salaried Staffs Association, which was predominantly clerical, although many junior managers fit into that category
TSSA = "Too Scared (to) Say Anything" meaning they're manager grades on higher money who roll over, have their bellies tickled and then take what's offered irrespective of selling their lower paid members out.

We are all entitled to our own opinions on this forum.
47 years on the railway and I have been a TSSA member for 30 odd. I actually joined the NUR at first and remained a member of NUR until they sold out to the NUS. I received the paperwork for the new RMT before we had even had a vote on the merger.
