Shows as 150227 for me. Even if it shows there's no possibility of.any 170 heading to Manchester

Realtime Trains is showing 150227.
Trust is showing 170203.
Craigybagel confirms my suspicion that it can't be a 170 though.

It does show on Genius as the 170.
Looking in more detail, looks like 170203 is forming the 1534 Ebbw Vale which is part of 150 diagram CF329, earlier covered by 150227.
When that diagram returns to Canton its booked to couple to a 153 then come back out for 1W26 to Manchester so something other than a 170 will come out on 5W26.

Why can’t a 170 go to Manchester?
Shrewsbury/Crewe don't sign them. Only Crewe Guards can work the service from Crewe to Manchester, so even if Cardiff staff could bring them up that far they could go no further.

I don't know if 170s are cleared for the marches, and I highly doubt any risk assessments have been done at the stations.

Except Hereford for the Birmingham services! Don't think they're authorised for passenger services but they have been up and down to Crewe a few times I think for various work.

Not cleared North of Craven Arms IIRC.

I don't they're cleared anywhere above Newport as they've never been to Abergavenny on match days or Hereford each night.
There's only 4 175's out today.

170203 showing as allocated to tonight's 1W26 20:05 Cardiff to Manchester.
It wont be a 170 as Crewe/Shrewbury train crew arent trained on 170s and they arent cleared for that route. They don't run anywhere other than Ebbw Vale, Maesteg and Cheltenham Spa on the TFW services.

And before we get a barrage of "why are they wasting 175s on Crewe - Chester shuttles?!?!", They interwork with North Wales coast services on a Sunday. There's no conspiracy to force people on longer journeys to suffer with 150s....

Great news. How many need to be in service to end the stock shortage issues?

Was it 17 diagrams supplied by Chester DMUD? So you'd need a total of 17 units (a mixture of 175s and 197s) available on a given day to return to normal. Not quite so straightforward though because they want to double up the 197 diagrams over Easter to reduce overcrowding on the North Wales Coast.

17 175 diagrams alone.

Ah, yes. I knew that it was something like that. Some of those 17 can and are being substituted by 197s - all six of the self-contained North Wales-Manchester diagrams are worked by 197s for a start, even though I'm pretty sure that at least one of them (the former LHCS circuit) is probably one of the 17 175 diagrams. In addition 197s have been working a few services between Holyhead and Chester (set swap for Birmingham/Cardiff).

From the May Timetable change I believe they still need 17 x 175 in service daily as they are meant to be covering some of the 170s work. However it's possible some 170s will be kept a while longer.

We will soon see how busy it will get on the coast with the Easter weekend soon.

After all the talk of the mix and match approach to the 10:32 from Swansea I was optimistic, RTT even suggested coaches added at Cardiff, but no. A very full 150 on its own today.

Good to hear there are more 175s coming back into service. Perhaps after Easter we might actually have 3 car trains on the Marches regularly again.

Currently it seems like a 175 comes back into service for a week then goes back into maintenance for a long time. For example 175116 was in service the week before last but haven't seen it listed for over a week now. Also some haven't been in service since the withdrawal a month ago.

likely the ones needing maintenance are struggling to get space with so many out of use

116 was having issues with loss of air pressure so it didn't exactly have a fruitful period out. I imagine it's had to have some attention.

Just got off 103 at Chester after a run from Birmingham International glad it was a 3 car as it was full and standing between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton good to see the diagram running as the booked traction.

175104 is out this morning on the 0805 Holyhead to Cardiff Central service.

Was unusually busy on my short commute to work. From overheard conversations, several groups of London bound passengers were opting to stay with the train to Chester instead of changing at Bangor.

With 104 spotted, all that is left on my list is 105, 111 and 113. If I stick to my self imposed rule of no trips just to see a number, I doubt I'll ever see 175111. I've almost certainly been a passenger on all the 175s, but I didn't start logging sightings and haulage until October.

Departures from West Wales (Milford Haven) to Manchester today that are 175s

1300 - 175103
1507 - 175102
1915 - 175116 (terminates Cardiff Central)

Also 175104 and 175003 on Holyheads. Plus 175011 on 1505 Swansea to Chester

All the Manchester that start in Cardiff appear to be Sprinters (apart from those that are MK4). So looks like 6 out again today.
