Surely anyone able to supply them would have been knocking on the door at Chester depot carrying a sample by now?
In my experience of railway electrical suppliers, that certainly would be the case.

Not sure if this has been mentioned here but could the Nova 3s usefully work the Marches longer term (197s notwithstanding…)
They haven't worked the marches at all it's a different fleet tfw only have mk4 loco hauled to work the route normally excluding the usual units

Surely Alstom can fix them? Not a good look to have so many units on an active family of units still being sold grounded with seemingly no easy fix.

I posted a quote earlier in the thread from a member of the Senedd claiming that the issue was due to Canton outsourcing the maintenance on these units and the people who came in didn't clean the enclosed engine spaces properly?

Is it a case of CAF taking over the Chester depot from Alstom too quickly?

It's more a case of CAF increasing the number of weeks between engine bay cleaning, from 3 weeks to 6 weeks. I think they've been asked to return to 3 weeks from now on.

That's not the reason that a dozen 175s are dumped in HHD awaiting the same part.

I'm aware of that, it's radiator issues. I was replying to the last part of the poster's post.

009 and 103 reported back in service today.

TfW has its rolling stock strategy and it doesn't involve anybody else's stock.
TPE also hasn't (yet) decided to dump the Nova 3s, so they are not available.

The interval is only partially relevant when you consider that 007 had recently been jetted when it went up.

The part I'm referring to isn't the radiator. If the word among the staff is correct, the part which is faulty has been directing hot gases right at the area where detritus accumulates.

So the exhaust then or the exhaust of the webasto.

I thought there was a reason why TFW, WMT and Northern Rail are running similar types of new train over routes they share was they can assist each other or is that just to simple?

They only have emergency rescue capability, not the ability to interwork. That said it wouldn't surprise me if they test working the classes 196 and 197 together given they're very similar

The TfW and WMT units can rescue each other - and it's not just a 5mph clear the line job, it's 75mph max. The northern units are incompatible.

However, this is more a happy coincidence that goes with their not being many option for pure DMUs available these days, and not because of any particular effort.

In any case I think this is missing the point - TfWs current rolling stock strategy going forward doesn't involve any stock currently operated by another TOC. That may change - TfW have already changed their plans multiple times - but it's not how it stands at present.

The reason, I believe, being that the coupler had to be flipped round (with the electrical connections underneath instead of on top) to fit the gangway rubbing plate.

Sorry thought it was 5 mph is that just with the 195s or have I completely messed it up?

5mph with an adapter between 197s and Sprinters. 75 mph between 196s and 197s coupled as normal. No compatibility at all between 197s and Northern units, or 175s.

But this is getting very off topic.

I'm pretty sure that a 175/197 adapter coupling exists, just as a 230/197 one does. There were several adaptors on that pallet in the training unit.

Presumably 197/196 coupling is mechanical only. If they're anything like 80x the software is probably on different versions and would prevent them electrically functioning.

Possibly, but it would seem odd that notices have been published in TfW depots about 197/Sprinter adaptors without any mention of 175s.

There's a special setting in the TMS for coupling with other Civity models. It does have some limits - one of which is the brakes revert to disk brakes only, hence the 75mph speed restriction - but as far as I know there is some degree of electrical compatibility all the same.

Next 170 expected from TFW on 01/04/2023 with a further unit expected on 08/04/2023
I know it's not exactly related, but it looks like things are going to worse for TfW, as it looks like they aren't keeping the 170s after all, at least not all of them.
(Quoted from the "EMR Class 170" updates thread).

For tfw this will inevitably mean suspending a lines service again. Which means it will either be the suspension of the Heart of Wales, milford Haven or Fishguard Harbour services again

009 on 0520 Cardiff - Bangor, 003 on 0819 Holyhead - Cardiff

103 and 006 have been out this week, and with 104 out as well that’s five in use now? Any others?

007 parked at Chester station on Thursday out of use

Also noted a few 175s on Chester CAF depot today but didn't catch numbers, 2 appeared to be 3 cars.

For what it's worth, I spotted a three car 175 passing through Sutton Bridge Junction on Thursday.
