- Tyne and Wear Metro shack clearance (and obviously hunting any winners)

Give me a shout if you're about, I still need a reasonable proportion of the fleet just I can never be bothered to go...

What I can confirm so far is that on the Monday (the Sunday will be a day of recovery after a long week at work, and to prep for the week) I have a reasonably priced Advance to Carlisle. 37 bashing will of course be the name of the game, and the Ravenglass & Eskdale line will finally get covered! After that, the head's spinning round the other ideas. I have a hunch the S&C shacks may also get a look in, and being so close to Glasgow at that stage a Daytripper will be hard to turn down!

Ravenglass is a lovely line so you'll enjoy that! Some mega tiny shacks down there ;)

S&C won't be open until next year remember and it's bustitution on the Carlisle end so unless you're leaping about for them from Leeds then I suggest you avoid that

Glad to see I am not the only one that gets stuck for choice as to where I go!! We really need to win the lottery to have a good clear out.

If you win, leave a couple of grand for me ;)

It's planning it all with a relatively tight budget, that's what makes it hard.

Final plan is nearly settled upon, and the booking phase is nearly here. I'm getting ready to spread my wings...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Sorry 37038, I forgot to reply to you. Aye if you fancy coming up then do let me know, I hope to have my visit confirmed soon.

Well then guys, another update was deemed necessary! Good progress has been made on the bookings and planning, although I'll confess I was also looking at going to Norway during the week off! The cost of just a one-way flight, and the airline, to Oslo put me off rapidly. If it had worked out differently, I'd have done quite the epic trip and scored a winner country. Maybe next year...

Anyway, the plan got revised following Kite putting another new idea in my head, as he indirectly reminded me that I need 4 GC HST power cars for haulage. Finding cheap Advances on the 1228 from Sunderland made that plan change easier! So here's the new plan, still subject to confirmation:

- Monday is head to Carlisle, some 37 bashing and a social.

- Tuesday is some more 37 bashing and covering the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway at long last, with a bit more social.

- Wednesday, head over the Tyne Valley to get my Tyne & Wear Metro shacks cleared out, as well as hunt some winners.

- Thursday, depending on the previous night's base camp, some more Metro bashing then the 1228 Sunderland to London on a GC HST, then some Great Northern bashing as priority one.

- Friday, depends on base camp (I have an idea of where I'm staying, but not looked at it yet) but I'm planning to head to Norwich as early as possible to get some 37 and hopefully 68 haulage, as well as GA DMUs and shack scoring.

From here on in I've yet to plan properly as I'm still toying with which day to go home:

- Saturday, again this depends on base camp but hopefully plenty more GA bashing all day.

- Sunday, well I've not quite planned this yet at all, but pending an acceptable Sunday timetable (and I know there's shacks only served on Sundays over there!) then one last day of GA bashing.

- Monday, most likely I'll have ended up in London again the night before, so some London area bashing and home. If I stay in the GA empire, then whatever takes my fancy from there before heading home.

Nowhere near all confirmed yet, and common sense says I'll be home on the Saturday evening so I can rest up before going back to work. That being said, 8 days of bashing sounds like enormous fun, hmm! Some of this lot will all depend on available funds, so expect a redraw of the plan again at least once, but a more final version of the plan is due in about a week's time. Or maybe 9 days' time, pending what time I have before and after work!

Well until I change my mind yet again (I knew I shouldn't have read that thread about favourite foreign railways!), here's the almost-final plan. I'm still going back and forth on the final bits and bobs at the end of the week, I friggin' hate weekends and engineering works! I'm going to be doing some in-depth planning for the GA bits later, which will help make the decisions for the Sunday easier. Expect a revision to the final portion therefore...

Monday 17th October is the start of the fun and games, and it's off to Carlisle for some 37 bashing and a social with Blindtraveller and his wife.

Tuesday 18th October, it's 37 bashing in combination with the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway with more social time before Blindtraveller and his wife head home.

Wednesday 19th October, a nice and lazy start due to the ching on the early services, I don't start out until the 1025 from Carlisle! I might do a quick shack attack somewhere in the area as a TTF (Tech's Thriller Filler) mind, but I'll decide that on the day. The afternoon is Tyne and Wear Metro bashing, as I need a megaton of shacks up there and 26 trains on it. I do have a plan to do something slightly different too of course, which depends on the gen...

Thursday 20th October, a much earlier start with the 0859 from Newcastle, the only HST journey booked. I will of course hope for the 1003 from York to have an HST turfed out on it, as a journey down the ECML on a MK4 is not enjoyable. York to Peterborough will, of course, have Tech's Mobile Disco pumping out some thumping tunes all the way! I shouldn't be complaining I guess, my one and only chance to score a 91 on this trip.

From there, it's all a little bit undecided. I have several ideas floating around, as I would like to do some required preserved/narrow gauge lines while in the area. All I know for sure is that I need to look at the atlas and make some decisions, rapidly, and that I have base camp in Acle that night. As long as I can make that, and the loco-hauled action, then all is gravy. Lush, thick, homemade gravy at that :D

Friday 21st October, the plan is *currently* to spend 3 full days in Anglia so a 3 in 7 Anglia Plus will be sourced. The name of the game therefore is to chase after my last 3 Anglia 170s, my last 5 Anglia 90s and of course the 153s and 156s that I need. Any winning 37 and 68 action will also be welcome, unsurprisingly. Shack scoring on this rover is also very much on the agenda!

Saturday 22nd October, base camp the previous night is set to be not far from Norwich station, so the earliest possible start to the shack scoring mission is looking the most sensible idea. Again, chasing requirements is a high priority, and base camp on this occasion is in Great Yarmouth.

From here, nothing is set in stone whatsoever. Engineering work south of Witham into London is putting me off going that way, as is engineering works between Norwich and Peterborough. So my original plan to head to London on the Sunday is out of the window, as is the backup plan to head home that day. I'm not willing to endure a 2 hour replacement bus journey if I don't have to! Things are being looked at here, I might revise the Thursday, Friday and Saturday to end up cancelling my booking in Great Yarmouth (saves £25) and head home on the Saturday. That option gives me two days at home to rest, recover and prepare for a return to work, as well as to get started on bookwork. Already I know that will take some doing, and there may need to be another epic Tech's Bookwork Weekend to get it all done.

Right now, though, I've got Bonkers 4 - World Frenzy on with Dougal's Mix playing. For the duration, while the brain does its thing, I'll be filling the ear canals with some happy hardcore from the late 1990s. Now if it was Bonkers 8 - The Resurrection, I'd probably stay at home all day and enjoy the nostalgia from 2002...As it is, I'll be heading out in about 90 minutes to get the last two Heart of Wales shacks in. Expect a mini trip report this evening...

Indeed, the only escape route which doesn't involve le bus, I assume is down to Stowmarket and get a 156/170 across to Cambridge via Bury St Edmonds

Well since my earlier post, here's the update:

Thursday, I head over into Anglia asap. Got a little under an hour to wait in Peterborough for a 170 to Ely, but it'll be worth it to save £7.50! Treating the fester as a lunch break and as time for a supply raid. Obviously loco hauled action will be chased after too!

Friday, all day hunting locos, DMUs and shacks.

Saturday I am heading home, so it's from Norwich in the morning to Cambridge. I can go via either Stowmarket or via Ely, I'll decide on the day. I had to bust out the magic plastic to book it, but got a decent deal on a First Class Advance via London and Newport. First Class on an HST will be absolutely wonderful, I've not done that in years!

Got the Advance with XC booked now too, so just things like the Cumbria tickets on the day, the Tyne and Wear Metro tickets and the Anglia rover left to pay for as and when the relevant days get here. The hotel bill will be quite significant of course, but it will all be worth it.

2 months and 2 days until the trip, feels like forever away but it'll be worth it. Now I can focus on planning Vienna's moves!

Sounds like a great plan Tech, I bet you're looking forward to it. It's making me think about planning another week (or a long weekend) away later in the year, although it entirely depends on whether I can afford it, especially after my ALR!

It may be worth checking Yahoo's Anglia Gen for 90's as occasionally a list of which ones are out are posted. I'll keep an eye out and let you know. Be warned that one 156 generally does the Marks Tey - Sudbury branch which is outside the 3 in 7 rover. Also the late afternoon/early evening at Ely sees some 317 action north of Cambridge as well.
I'm doing a 3 in 7 rover in Anglia myself, as a way of knocking off some 317/321/365 requirements around Cambridge and also do the short sets.

3 weeks today is the October mega bash, #TechsOctoberFest is the hashtag if I've not mentioned it.

January I have a week off in, and I'm planning to head to SPT Land to clear out a ton of shacks and EMUs. Hashtag to be announced, but I think I know what it will be already. Moves to be confirmed soon, but as much as I'd like to fly up I have a hunch Megabus or National Express will have to be my saviour!

I keep forgetting this thread exists!

#TechsBigBang2017 sees me head to Scotland for a social with Blindtraveller and of course for some trains. This begins on 7th January, not much longer!

I have a trip to Brussels booked now too, thanks to Kite159 reminding me about the Eurostar sale. Thankfully I had funds available to take advantage of it, and I'll be off to London on 21st January to position myself for the early morning Eurostar from St Pancras. The idea here is to do some loco bashing, perhaps mixed with the odd EMU, in Brussels and the name of the game being to fill my books with as many ticks and underlines as possible. It was meant to be coming back the same day but that didn't happen.

The other goal is of course to get some Jupiler going on, as well as other Belgian beers. Early morning Eurostar home on 23rd January, then a minor amount of London area bashing before heading home. Not decided which way I'm going to London yet, which will dictate how many moves I can make.

Hashtag for that trip is not yet decided, but it will be announced asap!

Don't touch Jupiler! There are quite literally thousands of better beers!

I fell in love with Jupiler almost 4 years ago, so I will definitely be getting some in. I plan to bring some back home with me too, as long as it's still as nice as I remember it of course.

I came to the realisation I of course need a megaton of track in Belgium, so I might well investigate a bit of a bash. Lots of ideas have been floating around, and I'm currently looking into giving a Thalys set a go. More important to try would be a DB ICE mind...

Get those 21s and 27s in, I really should make the effort to deckchair again...

That's the hope, I do like the 27s. It's not for nought that one of my highest view counts on YouTube is the video of one making a racket out of Midi!

Where's the best place to get them? I like the 18s and 19s as well, so will be happy to have them. If an AM72 was to turn up mind, I'd have to give one a go again. Obviously 21s and 27s are high up my priority list, I just need to find out what services I'm likely to find them on.

Just re-read my trip reports from 2013, it was 2102 I see that I have a clip of on YouTube. Naturally, I've just played it again and I had to give it a flail!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2pRf1u_4gw

Get the volume up and enjoy!

I also note I've been talking of going to Norway for 4 years now, thankfully I plan to finally deal with that this year. I've also been talking about doing another Eurostar journey for just under 4 years (it will be 4 years on 9th January), which I'll finally fix this month. I made sure to book the correct dates this time

Lots and lots of short leaps coming up then, I will post a seperate thread in International Rail shortly.

Evening all,

Not much to discuss really, but the hashtag for this weekend has changed to #TechsRedParade as my original choice was not unique as I expected it to be. It'll kick in around 1730 on Saturday, lasting until around 1730 next Monday. I should warn in advance that photos will be included, so I would load the trip report on WiFi if your mobile data is limited.

After the Brussels trip, I have nothing booked. Yes I really haven't booked anything else for January, although I am thinking about my choice of moves. It can't be anything massive, as funds are limited due to losing my case full of clothes recently on the way to Edinburgh. I should be dealing with that in the coming days, so as I will be having to replace something like 3 shirts, 4 t-shirts, 7 pairs of underwear and 7 pairs of socks, not to mention a nice and thick jumper and a comfortable pair of jeans, I won't be doing much. I need almost nothing in the Midlands now, and I've yet to have a 175 this year so I'm looking at Wales...

Details to come on that of course. I'm looking at a mini London bash in early February, potentially twice next month, but again nothing is confirmed.

Sorry this update is a bit late. Here's what's coming up:

This Friday, 10th February, I'm co-hosting an evening out with colleagues in Hereford. Nothing fancy, just a meetup for food and adult beverages. It will be most desirable after working my day off! No bashing for a couple of weeks, which will be tough on the soul but worth it in the long run!

23rd and 24th February I'm up north for #OperationBeerBash with a couple of beerheaded bashers. The name of the game is basically to enjoy some beers in good company while also enjoying the railway. Hopefully some winners will be coming my way too, and a few shacks are lined up to be done too.

The big one, with some parts still being finalised, is #TechsWorldFrenzy from 9th to 12th March. I have yet to book Advances on the UK side of things, but after battling through different plans I got the Norway trip organised. It will be exhausting, with an ultra early start on the final day, but well worth it! This hashtag will be used on future visits abroad too.

Beyond that is unplanned, as I forgot when I booked Oslo that I'm supposed to be at the dentist on 10th March. I will of course re-arrange that, the opportunity to have 3 days off together was too great to turn down!

Oh yes, June's ALR with Blindtraveller should be going ahead. I got the preliminary green light for it, I'm just awaiting my confirmation paper for that week but planning can now begin in earnest!

Sounds like you've got an interesting few months ahead, Tech. My ALR is pencilled in for early to mid April, I'm just waiting for confirmation from my friend Tony before going ahead and booking the time off. Any ideas where you're going for your ALR yet? :)

Ouch! Sounds fun and something I'd like to do one day, but a bit of an endurance test with the current stock!

It will be an endurance, but we're going to use a Weekend First upgrade. £20 will be very well spent! Of course, some adult beverages will be enjoyed by the time we get to the Midlands
