At university in Edinburgh, Scotland, 1977, I met an exchange student, she had just arrived from Los Angeles via London. First conversation :
"How did you get here from London?".
"Oh, the express train. It took a while. 10 o'clock from London, it's 7 and a half hours."
"Whatever happened. Did it break down? Normally it's 5 and a half hours".
"No, 7 and a half is the regular one".
"Well, 5 hours and 43 minutes actually" (Deltic-hauled Flying Scotsman that year).
"No, you're WRONG".
And we were together for years afterwards
. Nobody who later heard this story could understand how I managed not to instantly walk off, grossly insulted.
