St Mary Magdalene's Church, Lillington, contains three stained glass windows by C E Kempe and Company - the east window of the south aisle (1895) and two windows in the north aisle (1908 and 1920). The Church of St Michael and All Angels, Llanvihangel-Ystern-Llewern, Monmouthshire contains an early 20th century stained glass window depicting Saint George and the Dragon, also by C E Kempe, which dates from 1906 to 1907.

The Red Hart in Llanvapley has reopened recently after a long period of closure and a court case in which illegal conversion to a residence was challenged by the local authority. I am happy to say that it once again serves ales from the Rhymney Brewery in Pontypool.

"Japanning" (a European imitation of East Asian lacquerwork, using resin-based varnishes applied in heat-dried layers to objects which are then polished to a smooth glossy finish) became a popular decorative treatment in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Pontypool was a well-known centre for japanning, as was Bilston in today's West Midlands.

Apparently, Bruce Forsyth made his first stage appearance in Bilston, but he was born in Edmonton, London.

The Grade I listed Parish Church of South Mimms is dedicated to Saint Giles. It contains a square baptismal font which dates from the 13th century and has 14th century panelling on the pier. Its cover, designed by Sir Ninian Comper in 1938, is supported on four gilt pillars. Sir Ninian Comper is also noted for re-introducing the 'English altar', an altar surrounded by riddel posts. He designed a number of remarkable altar screens (reredos), inspired by medieval originals; one example is at Wymondham Abbey, Wymondham, Norfolk.

Wramplingham in Norfolk also lies on the line of the River Tiffey.

Bill Bryson -- with whose writings I have a love / hate relationship -- has during his life, switched between living in his native USA; and in a considerable variety of locations in Britain: which have included Wramplingham, and Kirkby Malham, North Yorkshire.

(Curses ... I was writing a link about Bill Bryson and then Kirkby Malham, but you both beat me to it!)

Llanfihangel Crucorney lies on the line of the old A465 road, which now bypasses the village. Further north, the road passes through the hamlet of Pandy, Monmouthshire.

I learn that "pandy" is the Welsh for fulling-mill -- as used in the process of cloth-making -- Pandy, Mons., has had a couple of same. There is a farm, which also furnishes holiday accommodation, called Fulling Mill: at Broughton, Oxfordshire (near Banbury).

Eccleston lies on the River Yarrow. There is another natural watercourse of that name, in the Scottish Borders: the Yarrow Water, which runs by the village of Philiphaugh shortly before it flows into the Ettrick Water.

Auldearn in the Highland Region was also the scene of a battle in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

Celebrated and often-revered Presbyterian ministers who had bad times with the authorities in the course of the above-mentioned protracted time of politico-religious strife (including both spending time imprisoned on the Bass Rock): were Alexander Dunbar, minister of Auldearn; and John Blackadder (presumably "no relation"), who operated chiefly in south-west Scotland; but died in 1685, while held on the Bass Rock; his grave is at North Berwick, East Lothian.

During the Troubles Bessbrook had a very busy military helicopter base. Happily this is now closed. The base for many British Army helicopters is now Odiham in Hampshire.

The underlying geology at Chobham is Bagshot Sands. The oddest outcrop of this formation is the Agglestone near Studland in Dorset, otherwise known as the "Devil's Anvil". According to myth, the devil threw the stone from the Isle of Wight, intending to hit Salisbury Cathedral, but missed!

Sadly, Crackington Haven was badly affected by the 2004 floods that damaged several other villages, notably Boscastle. The road bridge across the stream, several homes and the pub were damaged by floodwater.
