The Moray Firth, on which Avoch lies, is one of the best places in Britain for dolphins; boat trips can be taken from Avoch to see the creatures, close-up if you're lucky. Another "dolphin Mecca" is New Quay, Ceredigion.

Waddingworth is considered to be located at the geographical centre of Lincolnshire. Meriden, West Midlands, supposedly -- and, it seems, inaccurately -- holds the same distinction as regards the whole of England.

For some years following World War 2, Meriden was the location of a Triumph Motorcycles factory.
In the same era, another famous brand of British motorbikes (BSA) was manufactured in Birmingham at Small Heath.

Leicester also lends its name to a variety of cheese.

The gentleman who lived from 1532 to 1588, and was the prime favourite -- some irreverent folk suggest, perhaps more -- of Queen Elizabeth I: combined nomenclature-wise, two Midland towns; to wit, Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester.

Bradford also has a twin town in the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Blackpool's "twin" is -- I feel seemingly incongruously -- Bottrop (a completely new place on me) in the Ruhr industrial area; Bradford's is Hamm.

The artist David Hockney was born in Eccleshill. Among his very varied output have been numerous landscape paintings of scenes in Yorkshire; but of the east of that county -- for the purposes of which project he resided for a while in Bridlington.

At Bempton is one of the British Isles' only two mainland -- Great Britain or Ireland -- breeding colonies of gannets. The other is at Troup Head: nearest settlement Pennan, Aberdeenshire.

Stenness parish adjoins the southern extremity of the Loch of Stenness, and has been politically merged with the civil parish of Firth.
The main village of the parish is the village of Finstown.

Lower Ellbister in Orkney is also a settlement area in which ancient cists have been discovered.

@Xenophon PCDGS -- you really have landed us with a horror here ! Best I can do: without leaving the northern isles -- sounding rather like Ellbister, is Isbister; of which there seem to be several, variously in Orkney and Shetland. I'm plumping for the one on Whalsay, Shetland.

Whitehaven in Cumbria also saw the demise at sea of shipping in 1778.

There were a number of settlements ending with the suffix " - ister " in the extreme north-east coastal reaches of Scotland, as will be known to those with the knowledge of the settlements in the area of the Wick and Lybster Light Railway.

The Saltom Mine near Whitehaven is said to have been the first in the world to go under the sea, made possible by the installation of a Newcomen engine in 1732. However a more famous undersea mine is the Levant, opened in 1820, near Trewellard in Cornwall. It was the site of the Levant mine disaster in 1919, when 31 miners were killed by the collapse of the man-engine which carried them up from and down to the working levels.

The hamlet of Boswednack in the parish of Zennor near the north coast of the Penwith peninsula in Cornwall is also located along the route of the B3306 which connects St Ives with St Just.

Horatio Nelson, naval hero, has some prominence in Madron; connected with this area being the first in Britain, where the news of his death at the battle of Trafalgar was learned of. He was born in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk.

North Creake was one of the locations hit by a tornado in the severe weather event which occurred across the country on 23 November 1981.
Another place which experienced a tornado of similar intensity on that day was Market Drayton in Shropshire.

Market Drayton's Old Grammar School was founded in 1555 by Rowland Hill, the first Protestant Mayor of London. A more famous Rowland Hill -- born in 1795 in Kidderminster -- was the teacher, inventor and social reformer who founded the Uniform Penny Post and invented postage stamps, with the Penny Black and Twopenny Blue of 1840.
