Is there any chance of those going to GWR to replace HSTs? if so I would imagine that's more likely as it would save DfT money

I think that's not unlikely for at least some of them but they have quite a lot.

I’ve heard this was apparently not the case with GA and their 379s, I’m sure Northern do open the gangways on sets that are coupled up.

When are any 158s and Turbostars coming off lease for Northern to try and grab?

TfW have 24 x 158s. EMT have 26 x 158s and only need about 16 to run Liverpool to Nottingham and thats if they continue to use 158s.

They wouldn’t need 34 to 50 units. Personally I think 175s would look better for GWR, passengers (i.e. voters) are more likely to see 158s as a step down.

I reckon they'd bid it, but I don't think I've ever seen a FLIRT with a gangway so it might be more difficult for them.

I think its more likely that nobody has ordered them. At GA they only couple 755s for few services, the TfW ones won't be coupled and fir the Metro units they either won't be coupled or have short journeys so people can change unit at the station

It's not just the UK where there are no gangways on any stadler units. As far as I'm aware there are no stadler units with gangways anywhere in the world, on any of their units. That obviously doesn't mean it's impossible, but does mean they have no experience with them and that it will require a new design, both probably leading to higher costs

To be fair, mainline rail outside the UK really doesn't do unit end gangways. They are very much a UK thing.

TfW's 158s will come off lease as the 197s enter service.
