Nothing has been mention about the 170 except that they ''Will be able to continue through the 2030's as will the 333''.
333s are just modifed 332s (which were prototypes) so there is no way the 333s will last into the 2030s, I think the 333s will be replaced before then.

Even if you abandon the IT and cabling and strip right back to a bare shell you still have the limited lifespan of aluminium alloys to deal with, as opposed to steel's immortality.
Given 323s bodyshells are made of aluminium alloys the 323s won’t have long left in them, after all production on the 323s started in 1992.

I can see the 323s maybe making it to the 2030s, but who knows.

The reason for the withdrawal of the Heathrow Express units however was an excess of 387 units and the fact that there wasn't a depot for the 332s anywhere nearby where they could be maintained.

Another part of the reasoning for the 332 withdraw was how worn out and corroded the 332s were. Granted Northern’s 333s are not in as bad shape as the 332s ever were, but I would be surprised to see the 333s still going in the 2030s.

I've never heard 332s were prototypes before
so there is no way the 333s will last into the 2030s
I don't see how that follows. It was a completely different situation with the 332s.

That really wasn't a major reason. If they wanted to they could have been kept going. It was easier and cheaper to use 387s than find a new depot.

Could have sworn I read somewhere the 332s were prototypes, can’t remember where though.

It follows because the 333s are just modified 332s, as far as I know the only difference is the interior (seating) and that the 332s had ATP whereas the 333s have TPWS. Luckily Northern 333s have been taken better care of hence why they were not recalled in 2016 when the 332s were. I still just can’t see the 333s lasting until the 2030s they may be the next fleet to go following the 319 withdrawal next year of course.

It was easier and cheaper to use 387s than find a new depot.
True, at the time though I saw a lot of people say the corrosion was a big part of the reason the 332s were replaced by 387s. Shame the 332s were owned by Heathrow airport and were therefor never offered to Northern (but that bit off topic).

There was a 6-car 323 in operation today on a Crewe-Piccadilly via Stockport service. Is this a sign of things to come when the WMT 323s transfer?

No they were new build units, like almost any new type of train today. Prototypes have been the exception rather than the rule for many years.

The plans are for the 333’s to see out their minimum life expectancy of 40 years which takes us to 2040. There’s no reason why they can’t.

As mentioned above there were an excess of 387’s and the specific Heathrow Express depot was demolished so replacing them with 387’s was the sensible option.

Let’s not go down that route yet again please. The reason Northern didn’t need the 332’s has been gone through so many times.

Have Northern ruled out taking some or all of the 175s when they finish TfW work - does anyone know if the idea has or is being considered, or is it nothing more than forum speculation?

People on here are certainly determined to find a home for them. They're the new 442s, the new 365s, etc. etc.

As things stand, Northern don't need them to run their timetable, so won't be getting them unless something significant happens regarding funded improvements. They could in theory be used to get rid of the worst of the older Sprinters, but you wouldn't be swapping like for like and wouldn't be able to eliminate an entire class of the older units (barring the 7x 155s) so I'm not sure what problem you're solving there.

One thing you could gain with 175s is by putting them onto long distance services requiring 100mph like the Barrows and Windermeres (which is, in part, what they were built for and did for many years). That would release 195s to use on local stopping services around Manchester where the acceleration brings most benefit, which would release some 150s and all 155s for scrap. With the Barrows and Windermeres to increase to 6-car working they will require a doubled fleet which will no doubt reduce the number working the likes of Athertons and Marples.

Have they been offered them in the first place to rule them out?

FWIW I personally would prefer sprinter replacement to be brand new bi-mode units based on what we already have (195/331) than someone else’s unwanted 23 year old trains.

Sure, but that is still speculation. I do wonder if they had never run those services in their early years, would anyone think to suggest they go there now?

Replacing the rather new 195s with 20+ year old 175s on any routes would not be a good look for Northern. Any sprinter replacements will most likely ether be more 195s or hydrogen 195s/331s.

Also relacing anything that has currently got 1/3 & 2/3 doors with end only is going to cause problems.

I would imagine they have been offered out since they will be off lease soon.

Northern have only ordered 20 extra 195s - not enough for any major Sprinter replacement programme and it'll be a few years before they're operating in the Northern fleet, whereas 175s will be available from early next year to begin the 150/155 withdrawal imminently.

Not necessarily; if the end door units are longer then the door arrangement may not be a problem. Also they could replace 156s and 158s in the North East.

Oh if only they weren’t working on Hull Botanic Gardens to become the depot base for 155/170’s. I’ve mentioned it several times before how people conveniently forget that fact due to their desire to withdraw 155’s and remove 170’s to elsewhere immediately.

Nether of those will be leaving Northern anytime soon as Northern are getting more 156s from EMR, and the 158s are the youngest of the Sprinters so I can’t see them going anytime soon.

First Sprinters to go will most likely be the 150s as they are the oldest sprinters, and there is not enough 175s to replace Northern’s 150 fleet.

If you add the 20 extra 195s to the 175 fleet then it should be enough to replace the 150s.

Hang on.

You originally had the 175’s replacing 155’s/150’s, then had them going to the north east replacing 156/158’s, now you have them just replacing 150’s all in the space of a few hours.

Which is it?

It’s nowhere near enough, there are 27 175s and with 20 195s that’s 47 units. Northern have 78 150s.

This in itself shows that Northern need to be looking at more modern stock to introduce quickly. They have far too many 1980s DMUs for this day and age and relative to other operators. There are currently no plans for anymore 195s above the 20 that have recently been ordered, so clearly a lot more extra stock will be needed soon if they want to replace the Sprinters over the next few years.

Tart the 175s up and "normals" wouldn't notice. They are excellent units from a passenger point of view and were very popular with FNW, the only problem is a relative lack of luggage space so they'd benefit from a few more floor level racks.

I do think Northern need to order some bi-modes for Barrow, Windermere and Southport (particularly now they're going to electrify via Westhoughton too), though Southport could run via Atherton instead for now and thus avoid running under the wires for most of its length. As mentioned the other option would be the Barrow/Windermere "ICs" to TPE for 802s (which would be VERY popular), but that'd rely on TPE being able to spare them.

Yea I had only thought of the door issue on the Oxford Road stop etc not the Middlesborough area.

Given that the 155s are staying for now, that's the best way to handle a microfleet of seven. Though I'm still somewhat surprised they have stuck around and seem secure- given that they are still a microfleet however you slice it- even more so with the 153s long gone. With additional 156s being released from elsewhere (EMR) I could see a case for reducing the number of different types operated.

With my enthusiast hat on, I'm glad the 155s are still going as I pretty much grew up on them... just a shame they've been moved further away! The refurbishment did a pretty good job of smartening them up (aside from the still poor legroom) and making them just about passable for modern use... but they certainly look more dated than the other Sprinters.

They're a microfleet but they use loads of the same mechanicals as the majority of the existing diesel fleet, can work in multiple with 15x and 170s and are an easy conversion course from other 15x for crew. Because of all the similarities, it doesn't really matter there is only 7 of them.

Of course. At the start of the last Northern franchise when the fleet strategy was devised, the current solution was the "least-worst" way of making the numbers add up. There were no easy alternatives as few Sprinters were known to be coming off-lease in the near future. However if you were planning things now, there would be a case for ditching the Leyland units for either 156s or 158s simply because there are more of them. As much as the 155s might share many components with a 156, another 156 will share more (I'm thinking of things like door mechanisms which are obviously different on the 155s).

175 are more than 20 years old but still superior to any Sprinters in my book and ordinary people wouldnt mind a more modern unit that has a better ride than the 195's let along the sprinters

I think there is always an obsession that new always mean better but its not the case. Also the obsession that the "big boy routes" should get the newist trains also but should not always work that way.

Either way if Northerns supposed plan is to have no ex BR units by 2029 then it's a hell of a challenge to replace such a large fleet, the pacer replacement has shown that and its only down to Covid is why that is not getting as exposed as it could of.
