The 333s were ordered as 3 car trains and later lengthened to 4 cars. So if anything the 'sparks effect' in this instance is the effect of brand new 333s replacing old 308s that attracted more passengers not the electrification work.
It'll be interesting to see if there's any growth on Manchester Airport-Blackpool services if 319s replace 185s.
You're right, I'd forgotten about the phased introduction of the 4th cars on the 333s. However, the 308s were a boost in capacity (while a bit long-in-the-tooth) compared to the 2/3-car pacers, and the 3-car 333s were a (smaller, admittedly) boost in capacity compared to the 308s.
There'll be more chance of a seat on a 319 than a 185, that's for sure!
The 319s in their current state are much less nice than one of Northern's newly refurbished 156s as far as interior is concerned. The 156s even have carpets!
