New-style Paper Tickets

Blackburn is now using the airline style stock for tickets to my dismay , rovers and rangers also including Northern Explorer I have purchased in several areas including Lancashire on airline style tend not to operate the barriers which I find frustrating .
I recently got one of the 'new' tickets for the first time and despite it appearing to have a similar barcode to e tickets I get on my phone it wouldn't scan at the barrier so I had to attract the staff to let me out. When they came over they said those tickets don't scan. The CCST tickets which were previously issued at the same booking office could, of course, be inserted in the gate to facilitate exit. Progess apparently !

Even more ridiculously, on my return I showed the ticket to the (different) barrier person and they insisted I scanned it, even when I said it wouldn't work. Of course it didn't open the gate and the barrier person said they knew it wouldn't work but "they" had told staff the tickets should still be scanned before opening the gate manually :'(

If it's a Cubic gate (which the majority are), a two or three digit error code will be displayed when a ticket is rejected. (Gates from other suppliers will also presumably display a reject reason, but I'm unfamiliar with those.)

If you make a note of that and contact the Train Company's Customer Service team with the details they can pass it across to their Retail team to investigate.

As well as the error code/message, it helps if you include the station, date, approximate time, ideally the gate number (should be displayed somewhere on the gate) and the Unique Ticket Number displayed beneath/beside the barcode. For Magellan (formerly Worldline) machines that will usually start with EN.

Surely "they" must have meant scanned with a device rather than the gate...

What type of ticket was it? Advance Single, and where was it issued?

The gate number is in a little blue box above the CCST reader.

My bad. I should have been clearer. Even if they haven't consciously registered the actual number, I suspect most people could find the number on a Cubic gate.

I'm not sure where they are on S&B and Vix gates though, as I'm deep in the heart of Cubic territory.

Funnily enough I just went to Bolton ticket office to get a northern weekend rover and thankfully they haven’t got the PRST tickets yet so got a CCST for this weekend

TPE booking offices now have bog-roll friendly ticket wallets, inside there are 2 slots for railcard and photocard, and a bog-roll size slot!

Lucky you! Barnsley has had the new system for 2 weeks now, said they have had loads of complaints about the tickets, I now either use the TPE office where I work, which can issue CCST, or use RST online, which I never used to do

That would make the most sense. However, as you probably know, loads of gateline staff have neither the means to scan tickets, nor any real time access to a colleague who does have the means. Some don't even have a work phone. So in practice...

I've never actually seen one before despite the claims here from a decade ago that these existed. Good on you for posting one!

A ticket wallet that won't fit in your pocket. Useful.

I think this was my point in re-opening / restarting this thread. Why have they not gone with ""CCST" size stock but better? Why did someone go "nope, mammoth bog roll you have to fold so that it rubs against itself and fades and that is really inconvenient even though it will contain no more information and it won't even be much larger"?

So that people are less likely to jam it into the CCST reader and destroy both it and their ticket. Doesn't stop them but I'm sure they would do it more if the loo roll was smaller.

While that sounds a bit jobsworthy, I think they insist we try to scan the ticket first so that, if the scan is successful, the Railway knows we have started to use that ticket.
