HS2 Construction Updates - Birmingham Area

New video, part from train, part from Drone of the Curzon Street approaches. The sheeting that had been covering a lot of the bridge girders appears to have been removed so they can now be seen, ahead of being moved into place.

In that video, if you stop at 1m 22s, can anyone explain the concrete pier over to the left that seems to be turned at 90° and away from the main line of route? Can that sort of pier be fully built up and then moved later, it seems normal to see them built over a piled foundation at their permanent site?

The middle of the video is the concourse end, where retaining walls below ground level are now clearly visible.

HS2 has issued a bulletin regarding installing the bridge over Lawley Middleway (just outside Curzon Street Station).

It will be installed during overnight road closures 10pm to 6am from 15th to 24th August, with additional closures for finishing and remove temporary supports 3rd to 18th October.


I am guessing once the bridge is in place the section where the tracks fan out to the 7 platform lines can be built to link the bridge to the already built station approach viaducts.

The Cross City line between Birmingham and Lichfield Trent Valley will close for 9 days from 26 July till 3 August so HS2 can build the new viaduct as mentioned in the video of #336

HS2 has now delayed installation of Curzon #2 bridge (Bellingham Bridge). Seems to be due to insufficient welders.

New dates are still to be announced as they need Network Rail to change the closure date.

Fabulous drone videos shows the challenge of construction above ground in urban areas. Have to say Curzon St Stn looks well behind where Old Oak Common is for what should have been an easier stn to construct.

They've only just started on the station footprint though. The priory was clearly the approaches and the bridges which are fairly advanced.

Build and fit out won't take for than a couple of years, I'm sure there's a timeline on here somewhere saying similar.

Possibly just how it's been scheduled, or drip feeding of funds meant it just wasn't the priority to have a station building before having other works done first.

New drone video has been posted of the viaducts in Coleshill area being constructed, unusually filmed at dusk (or near sunrise) as it is all lit up.

3 of the 5 viaducts (with piers of other two) are now clearly visible and are approaching the point where one flys over other tracks as part of the grade separated delta junction

Another new drone video of Curzon Street station area, appears to be just one piling rig there now so presumably down to last few foundation piles.

The video zooms in on the various foundations, along with the retaining walls around the station site.

Also shows the extension of the tram tracks (to near Masshouse Lane), where a temporary single platform appears to be over the second tram tracks. Looks like not much to do before trams can be extended to there

The Construction Index has given details of the imminent move of bridge over Lawley Middleway on approach to Curzon Street.

Contractors for HS2 are moving a 112-metre long, 1,631-tonne steel structure over a section of Lawley Middleway, part of Birmingham’s ring road.

The operation will be delivered by HS2’s main works contractor in the Midlands, Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) and subcontractor Mammoet, the Dutch heavylift specialist.

The bridge, part of HS2’s Curzon Approaches, was built off-line rather than in situ, on land next to Digbeth Canal, to reduce traffic disruption over the last two years.

Mammoet has jacked the structure up onto two self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).

According to the programme, on Friday 15th August, the bridge will be rotated through 90 degrees on the SPMTs. From 16th to 23rd August, a skidding system with a jacking push/pull mechanism, will then be used alongside the SPMT to move the structure into place across Lawley Middleway. This combination of techniques is rarely used and is a first for BBV on the HS2 project.

To minimise disruption to road users, the span will be moved in night-time operations, moving around 12 metres every night, keeping the road open during the day.

Here's a YouTube video showing what Mammoet have achieved so far - basically the 90° turn to the starting point for crossing the road.

I had assumed that the move over the Lawley Middleway would involve those big wheely things picking it up, rolling forward as far as the space available allowed, then putting it down on the nearer pier and one of them at least going back to prepare for the next night's move. However, there may be a bit more to it than that!

If the video is stopped at 38s in, just before it gets dark, in the centre foreground there’s a concrete pier that seems to be completely off the line of the eventual viaduct. I’ve asked about it before but either nobody noticed the question, or knew the answer. I hope no-one minds me asking again?

I think it was a test construction, not sure if it will stay like a piece of modern art, or be taken away eventually, reassembled in correct position, or just left there until someone redevelops the site.

Once the bridge is moved across the road (multiple slides, over number of nights), they can then start to build the section back to the 7 platform approaches. The area either side of finished approach can then be disposed of

So it would have been a prototype installation to test out the construction method, which is also explained in that video:

Thanks for taking the time to find that, it’s a video I must have missed at the time it was published, and as you say the ‘trial pier‘ was mentioned.

It is seen there still in its initial position. The roller skates forming the main support near the middle have been removed, and those under the back end (for its coming move) need to be turned through 90°.

It was clear before that it could not be slid in the usual way, as its lower side is arched. The extra steel tacked on the bottom gives a level base, but with gaps. So any support there has to move, e.g. to be on wheels.

The extra bit of cleverness is inside the two main piers. If you look at 0:55 you can see some (four in all?) red supports under a transverse I-beam, with wheels underneath running lengthwise on more big red steel girders. That must be the moving support there, and there will be another one in the other main pier. So when the "prow" lands (and it does not have very far to go) support can be given there too.

I guess there will be several different configurations of support during the move, but it's hard to predict what they will be.

Interesting the wheels under the rear modular support transporters are always at right angles to where you would expect them to be. Maybe its the parked position between pushes but seems to be putting a lot of stress on the wheels to turn them through 90 degrees for each move. Anyhow very impressive Gerry Anderson would have been proud.

Yes, it looks to have moved three steps forwards. The transverse beam on the wheeled supports on the nearer pier is now close to mid-span; it was at the far end of the span. It must have been detached and moved back with the whole thing supported at both ends.


There can't be much weight on the rear support now, expect when that transverse beam is moved back. But that support certainly has moved in mysterious ways - why it is back sideways on, and what was the support during the moves? I guess you'd need to see it doing what it did to know.

I wondered if all the individual wheels are turned 90° during a movement cycle, and then turned back to sideways orientation once the move is complete, which would effectively make it an anchor against movement towards the road. One of the videos I’ve seen shows evidence of tyre scuff marks over quite a wide area under the structure, as though they were being forced to move.

I can't find a drone view, but looks like the forward part of the bridge (with the blue temporary struts) is now clear of the slider on the mini video on x


I am guessing the lowest part (the bottom of the arch shape underneath) is the part that sits on the concrete pillars. Therefore more steel parts need to be added to the ends making bridge longer once moved. Clearly the design is wider at the Curzon Street end as trackbed fans out towards the 7 platforms

I did wonder that. Turning the wheels was obviously needed during the initial spin-wheel manoeuvre, but seemed unlikely during the straight roll-out. After all, any movement to the side would be even more disastrous than for-and-aft, so more worth resisting.
This other video has some good close-ups and overhead shots, and from those you can see the the marks of tyre scrub are not in straight lines arrayed behind the SPMT. They are to the side and at odd angles, as from complicated juggling into position.

But so far it is the best explanation on offer. The question really is which operations most need a resisting force and in which direction. That's going to depend on how the weight is supported while other supports are adjusted.

Under the prow, there are two pairs of wheeled supports and several of the red jacking crossbeams. Under the main span, there's one fixed red jacking crossbeam presumably to take the weight while the weathered steel one is moved and reattached. Lots of complicated choreography going on there!

A specialist HS2 engineering team has moved a 112m long, 1,631 tonne steel structure over a section of Lawley Middleway – part of Birmingham’s ring road, four days ahead of schedule.

The operation was successfully delivered by HS2’s main works contractor in the West Midlands, Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) and their bridge move contractor Mammoet.

To minimise disruption to road users, the huge span was moved during night-time road closures - moving between 18 and 24 metres every night using a special skidding system - ensuring that the road has remained open during the day.

From the first day of the move on 15 August, the team - helped by favourable weather conditions, were able to get ahead of programme, meaning the road will be back to normal from 6am on Friday 22 August instead of the planned full reopening on Monday 25 August.

I’ve looked right through the video at slow (1/4) speed, and at about 20-24 seconds in you can see the SPMT wheels change direction by 90°. Sorted. :D Best to slow it down and zoom in.

I don't see that! The big initial turn ends at about 0:19, and the next thing seen after the video cut is movement lengthwise. Between the two is a 90° wheel rotation that we always knew had to happen, but I don't see it on the video. The wheel-waggling after 0:20 is a slight adjustment in position during the move into the pier, not the kind of locking 90° turn evidenced in the earlier pictures.

That locking now looks more like a belt-and-braces extra reassurance of safety while the road was open. I can't see any evidence of it being done for each pause for repositioning the supports during a night's move (but then it might not have made the edit). Nor do we know if any 90° turn for locking was done all wheels at once or, at less cost in scrubbed-off tyre rubber, a few wheels at a time with them unloaded.

In that HS2 video there are also some better close-ups of the moving supports at each pier that I said had wheels. They don't - this is the "special skidding system" mentioned in the text. Presumably the skids slide on blocks of PTFE, and they have jacks to remove any friction forces from the support itself. One of those skids can be seen on the ground at 0:20.

I trust you saw Mammoet showing off their ability to mount two high-profile heavy moves at once. Even if HS2 and their contractors like to claim all the credit and downplay their specialist engineering contractors (as they did with Freyssinet too).

The whole of the Lawley Middleway viaduct, between viaducts Curzon 2 and Curzon 3, is 213 m long. What's been moved is 112 m (about 95 m plus 17 m for its prow). So a lot more needs to be added to finish the viaduct. It makes some sense to refer to the bit that's been moved as Lawley Middleway Bridge, as HS2 do in that announcement.

The next phase of the M6 bridge push, near Chelmsley Wood, is scheduled for last weekend in September (27th-28th). This is second push of the southbound viaduct.

Two more closures follow for Northbound viaduct (each viaduct carries 2 tracks as this is a 4 track section between delta junction and Birmingham Interchange station, so trains for each route can run in parallel). Third closure expected December, and 4th will be in 2026

While the Lawley Middleway bridge move was reported as "complete" five days ago, all the pictures from then showed it still propped up on those spacers. You could see that most of that red Mammoet shifting kit - including the skidding system, and the jacking beams - had to be taken out to allow the lowering. But that has now all been done, and it's sitting on its piers (or rather bearings, I guess). Here is a picture from Saturday by Elliott Brown, posted on X:

The move, as in the need for road closures was completed. Yes it still needs lowering, but that's not what the closures were for
