This reminds me of the gcr gala weekend i attended years ago with my dad. It was the Swanage returning to Loughborough tender first, so no one was particularly interested in taking pictures of it, however one bloke with a videocamera decided to lay on his back on the balast within two feet of the rail filming upwards as the engine passed over him. I remember both the drver and fireman going absolutely mental at the gentleman. When questioned by other photographers as to why he did it he claimed everyone talking was interupting his recording.

It is such a shame when someone like him has to be plain stupid about it and stand almost on the track. I'm sure his family would of said it was the railway's fault as well should of he been hit by the train (which thank god didn't happen).

& Of course when "Normal" photographers come to railway stations they get denied because of the likes of him....

I think its becoming as notorious as the 'lorry pushes clio down motorway' film.

Lets hope if anything, some common sense will come from it and make enthusiasts that little more careful. I doubt it will ever be possible to prosecute people for these kinds of incident, so i suppose the only thing that can be done is to educate people of the dangers....

{YouTube} Video has now been removed.

I am not surprised as the implications of this video could have been huge I think it should have stayed!

It'd be interesting to know whether the uploader sold the rights to his footage then took the video down or the BTP told him to take it down, and then distributed his footage. I'm not sure how these things work.

Actually...I went on a little hunt around the web this morning when I found that to be the case, and - Although the first instance of the video has been removed from YouTube - It doesn't look like the uploader did it on his own bat. A couple of comments on his channel page imply that YT removed it for "copyright infringement"... hock:
I can say though that at time of posting, the video was available on YouTube re-uploaded in a different location...Although I won't post the URL publicly, as otherwise it'll be taken down again by our Google Overlords... :roll:

...Just goes to show what our World is like nowadays: Someone uploads something that gets a lot of views and becomes popular, the media take an interest in the footage, and suddenly the original recorder of said footage finds that it's suddenly become the "property" of a large media organisation somewhere! :roll:

As far as I'm concerned though, this kind of corporate theft and censorship of the Internet is something that I'm strongly opposed to...So having grabbed the HD version off of YouTube and run it through some conversion software I have here, I've put it in a place where those wanting legitimate access (For use as a track safety vid etc.) can still get to it if they need to. See the appropriateley named attachment for more details. 8)

Going back onto what I said in my last post though, it seems that the gent in question was literally a hairs-breadth from certain Death when that 170 almost clipped 'im! :eek:
After running the YouTube video over here, I went through it frame-by-frame and grabbed a few screenshots. A couple of them are blurry due to the encoder that I'm using, but it's clearly obvious just how near a miss this really was...Look at how close that step-board gets to his right elbow! hock: :? ad:

O L Leigh, working for NXEA, do you know how the driver is? Did he EMG stop the train or did he carry on? Was he taken off at the next station?

Standard procedure is that we get met by station staff who check if we are alright to carry on. In this case of Thurston. The unit was heading to Peterborough? It would be difficult to terminate it anywhere until Ely. I've had enough of these incidents in the past.But i carry on if noone has been hit.

OLL works on the westside so unlikly (though possible) that he would know the driver or know the circumstances of this specific incident.

However I have been informed that Network Rail have opened an investigation into this incident as it was never reported. The first they knew if it was from the clip in YT.

Now I don't have anything against photographers as I have much respect for them with neildimmer, Snapper, traininthebrain and Nigel Gibbs as just a few of the dozens I have learnt to appreciated.

But actions like this moron and the other moron earlier on in the clip doesn't do the hobby any good at all and by all rights, should have have been escorted off the premises and told not to bother to return.

There is no requirement for anyone to be in that position at the ends of any platform as there are more then enough positions safely available from the platform, ends of platforms in my book count as lineside and the only people who should be anywhere there are NWR staff/contractors, drivers and other staff who may have a need to be there.

From my view, if the driver applied the emergency brake I wouldn't have blamed him or her for doing so as that so very easily could have be yet another fatality on the railway.

I know some stations on the Hertford line or New Line do have the ends of the platforms fenced off with a wooden fence and wooden rails or similiar put down on the platform ends to prevent usage so action like these two morons is a good enough reason to ensure they're installed at all locations.

Please note I'm not stupid enough to tar the whole community with the remarks as I'm sure it's only a minority who think they have the god given right to do whatever they want to do.

Ajax103 - The reason Death and Myself provided the URL's as Pictures is to Protect them from those nasty 'Google People' - so therefore preserving the videos life on YT. [Politely] Could You Remove the Video from your post because of that one reason. If someone wants to watch it they can follow the URL's.

There is no need to provide the links as images. Google will only see it as a link to YT.

Not Necessarilly, I reckon that goooooooooogle will se a picture as a Picture - they will not see it as a URL. I also reckon that the 'google people' are automated computers - so therefore 'seconding' my first statement.

Wonders if any of you lot have android phones.... also Youtube can tell what is in a video too. I tried uploading something that showed a f1 clip and immediately after processing (where it converts to flash/H.264 for HTML5) it rejected as the video contained F1 content!

Then clearly the driver never called it in as a near miss, otherwise it would have been recorded on the incident log.

True, but as I understand it one may not stand on any part of a crossing except for the purpose of crossing the line when the indicators show it to be safe to proceed?

In which case he is clearly in breach of both those rules 9 are they just rules or actually law? ). He could probably be done for "endangering the safety" as well?

Kidding aside, you see loads of people foul of the yellow line on the ECML where the train is blasting by >100mph and I'm sure most of them have gone home to have their dinner that night! Granted he may have been a little closer but still.
